silver- 2002 Camaro
I have a "slow to return to idle" problem with my auto 2002 Camaro. With the brake on and holding to a stop the idle will eventually get down to 650rpm. But, it takes a while to get to that low idle speed. With the trans in drive just release the brake and the car will start to roll and and then the idle speed goes up to 1100. The car will actually run through 1,2 and into 3rd on level ground all after a 650 brake on idle. I have a new IAC in hand (with an orange/red Oring) and will R&R same tomorrow. Sure hope it makes a significant difference. Any suggestion are welcomed.

Can it get worst
OOOOH yea, it made a difference. Sure glad the brakes could hold it. Even after warm up it was still charging down the road if you took your foot off the brakes. I think it was better than 1200 when it started to roll....it can make it to 4th now. I am going to replace the throttle position sensor this afternoon. Hope it makes a POSITIVE difference. Ive got an appointment with somebody that knows what they are doing Wed so I can't be in too much trouble (I hope).

I have a performance converter (10 1/2" vice 11"), and my cold start idle speed is set @ 1200 rpm, and decreases to 700rpm (warm).

Thanks Steve. I get 600 to 700 after it is in drive and with the brake on (but it takes a while to get there). Back to yesterday: I decided I would drive it a few miles to get the TPS. It actually ran better. I changed out the TPS and it is about the way it was before I changed the IAC. I wonder if the torque converter is releasing as it should. It just seems like I have to mussel it down each time I stop from 1100 or 1200 RPM. It even jerks a little when it down shifts to 1st. Hope I can get in the shop this week.

Sounds like possibly an issue with the torque converter clutch? How's the transmission fluid?

I have not checked it in 3 or 4 hundred miles but it was fine when last checked.

for what its worth my stock ls1 camaro starts and idles cold at about 950, then down to 750, and once completely warm purrs at 650, and then 550-600 in gear. tach on dash is a little off, those readings are from a digital scanner

Thanks for the idle speed info. I took my Camaro over to a guy that knows the cars and left it to be "fixed". He could pinch closed the PCV line and the idle immediately fell off to normal. Obviously there is an air leak in the PCV line. I don't know what else he will find but anyway the idle will be right when he is done along with some other services I requested.
