advice on stall converters?
I need some advice. I am looking at getting a converter. I have a 2001 SS a4 and so far I have the free mods and a slp loudmouth. If I get the stall converter what speed should I go with as in the future I do plan on doing a cam as well. I was thinking in the 3200-3500 rpm range. Also if I do the converter will I need to get a tune? I do know that I will need a good tranny cooler as well. Thanks for all the help?

3500 rpm is a real good stall speed.

I only have experience with 2 converters so far.The first was a Midwest and it was junk as far as drivability goes. Now have a PI 3000 and it is excellent.

You might want to try Fuddle Racing for your convertor. My transmission went out and they rebuit the convertor at no charge.I only paid for freight.Great service concidering the convertor was burned up by the transmission.FYI

I have a fuddle and it has been great. I went with a 3200, I would recommend higher than this.

By far the best converter I have ever owned is the Vig3200. This is hands down the best street strip converter that you can buy. I have owned different brands besides Precision Industries (Vig3200) and very few have matched the driveability and performance it has to offer.

I just put in a YANK ST3000 and it felt good but I still wasnt so sure it was worth the money and time. I took it to the track last night and I was very happy that I beat my old best (13.6 @ 103.9). I managed a 13.3 @ 104.9 and I had to REALLY REALLY baby it off of the line. So with stickys I am pretty sure I could break into the 12s. I am still sportin the 2.73s and all I really have is a LID and CAI. I was very pleased especially when I compared it to everybody elses time. TRACTION IS DEFINATELY AN ISSUE!!!

I run a Tranny-cooler inline with the radiator cooler.
The only time it get up to 200* is when the engine is over 200*.
I may just only run the tranny cooler.

We have a test unit (4L60E) in a '98 Z28 mule from a nearby engine shop... it has a mild (bolt ons) engine... it has an additional cooler w/fan in the fascia... after high mph pass on the freeway, brought it back letting it hot soak and then flashing the converter hard on two back to back cold tire launches I took these temp readings...engine temp 205* F... trans temp 152* F.
We think that is a bit cool, but as long as it is well above 100*F I am ok....we set the bushings up tight in that unit and there in lies the concern.
We went with a 3700 TCI converter in this one. We have a 3200 Vig. that came out... Really the only reason why we changed is it didn't flash as high as we wanted and the car seemed tight to our driver. It needs to be freshened up before we install it again. Might put it in a stroker car next month... we'll see how it does with a bit more HP on it.
