GEAR INSTALL 3.73 vs 4.10 ????????????
I have a 2001 Trans Am Ws6 M6.
I have lots of bolt ons.
Next step is installing my gears. I dont know which set up to go with 3.73 or 4.10. My car is a 6speed. Ive heard 3.73s are better for top end and speeds of 100mph+ VS 4.10s that are good for launch but lose top end and consume more gas. Which are a better setup? i hve my stock rearend and also what is a good website to order from and what else should i order to install the gears as in a install kit? any other parts that should be replaced?
thanks for any input

On my 98z I had stock 342s on m6
On my 00 SS m6 I got 3.73s difference is minimal. Can't really feel it
I'm thinking on goin for 4.10s. If you like to take quick and al That.
The way to go is 4.10s. 3.73s coulb better at 100+ I don't know. Nut who drives 100+ on the city? Lol
On gas mileage I believe you drop like 2-3 miles per galon on the highway.
I don't think you will notice that on the city

I can do well over 100 mph with my 4.10s. Never topped it out actually. I would go with the 4.10s. No loss of gas mileage either.
That being said, I'd also save and get a different rear. The stock 10 bolt is weak, and at some point will break. Traction + power = a broken rear. I would upgrade to a 9". It's worth it.

Yup, 4.10s in a 6 speed. And like walt said, with a great ratio like that grabbing any traction dont expect wonders from your rear end, 10 bolts are notorious pieces of crap lol

4.10 is the way to go

I like the 4.10 ratio but 3.73 is alot stronger with the 10 bolt because its already so weak and the 4.10 pinion gear gets really small on the 10 bolt to accomodate ratio and its even weaker. I've tried both and the 3.73 lasts way longer and still has good accelleration and good midrange and top end. I have an 8.8 in my car now with 4.10's cause the 10 bolt was to weak for my combo of heads cam and juice.

I'm rear shopping and i'm planning on a 9inch with 4.11s
If you google you can find a calculator that will show you the RPMs at any speed in each gear for any rear size you tell it.

Dropping gas mileage city and highway
But I never had em on my car
So can't really say it's true.
On city shouldn't make a difference idk bout highway
With all of you saying this bout 4.10s
That's gonna be my next mod! Lol

This one has a few ways for it. One way is in case you dont know the rear gear but you cant find out using the other variables.

People say all gears are noisy but I say thats not all true. My 3.73s are pretty darn quite (pajeff02 to confirm). I went with just the stock 7.5 rear with Motive 3.73 gears, the heat treated version. Just make sure a good shop sets them up or you get someone who is good at it to help you.
My gear swap was roughly $100 and he felt bad for charging that much! lol

Noisy gears = installed incorrectly. If your gears are noisy, you have improper preload, improper shims, or improper backlash.

If you are going with higher numerical gear, make sure you use the better, 12 bolt or 9" rear. 4.10 will literally make your 10 bolt more closer to being dead. With that said, it will just be wasted money down the drain. Use that money wisely, save up for the better rear and do the gear.

I don't have enough money for a new rear .... So I'm putting on 4.10s . If anyone has them installed on their stock rearend , how long have you had them ? Any problems?
