It's not uncommon for hot rodders to run radical mechanical roller camshaft profiles on the street, and that requires pretty stout valvesprings to keep the lifters in contact with the cam lobes. It's a wise idea to keep tabs on the condition of the springs by checking at regular intervals for signs of a significant change in spring pressure. The easiest way to do that is with an on-head valvespring pressure tester. We just bought the adjustable SC-200 tester from LSM Racing Products, and it's our new favorite tool. The machine work is impressive, and the flexibility to check springs under both shaft- and stud-mounted rocker arms is fantastic. The head pivots left and right so even those pesky offset rocker arms can be grabbed with the tool to verify that our springs are within spec. We bought ours from Jesel, but you can also find them at several mail-order parts suppliers including Summit Racing and Jegs.
