No one that I know of makes a 275/50R16. The other problem you may not understand is that when you go wider from a 245 to a 275 you must bring the sidewall aspect ratio down so that your overall diameter does not increase and you end up with a tire that is wider but also taller!
You would have to bring your sidewall on a 275 down to a 45 or 40 series to maintain the same diameter as stock.
There are some 275/45's made by Hoosier in a drag style tire but not recommended for auto-x.
One of your biggest enemies in autocross competition is sidewall height. You want to stick to a low profile! So stay with stock height or go lower than stock to pick up some additional stiffness.

Thanks !!! I actually bought a used set of Kumho 265/45/16 V710's. I've autocrossed them several times now and they work just fine. They work much better than the driver. )

How do you read the width of a tire i thought it would be the middle number for ex: 275/50/16. If i want a fatter tire for the back wouldnt i go to 275/45/16 or am i completly off? 275 is the depth of the tread?

274 is how wide the tire is 45 is how tall the tire is and 16 is what size rim it goes on.

Metallic Navy Blue- 1998 Firebird Formula
I put the Vette C6 rims on my 98 Formula and all 4 rims are 18X8.5 inch. I am tire shopping and wondered how wide a tire I can get away with without rubbing or having them stick out of the wheel wells? I currently have BFG KDW's in 245/40 on and am looking for something a little wider. What would you guys suggest I could get away with?? If it makes any difference I think I settled on Nitto NT 555 Extreme's as the tire I'm buying.

I have a 02 Camaro SS so it's 275/40R-17. I want to buy rims for the drag strip and I want 17in by 11in rims. My question is will 315/35R-17 fit on that size rim(safely) and will the rims and tires fit on the rear of the car without rubbing?
Thanks guys

that is an awfully skinny set of wheels. the widest you can go is a 255 on an 8.5 wide wheel.
315s will fit that rim size just fine. i will be running 315s on my 18x11s here in a month or so. as for the rubbing it all depends on the offset of the wheel.

Thanks 2001camaroSS. When you put yours on let us know if it rubs or not.

305's on a 10" rim?
I've been looking at swapping my 17x11 stockers with 315's for a 19x10 to get rid of my rubbing issues that occur only when the car goes in a bind (i.e turning to go up a steep ramp into a parking structure). Now before others try offering alternative fixes to decrease bind, I already have larger FT/RR sway bars, ADJ Panhard bar, LCA's, Sub-frame Connectors, and Koni sing/adj shocks.
I was hoping to fit a 305 on the 19X10's, so I don't loose too much width.

you know I thought that too, but because I am decreasing the sidewall to a 30 from my 35, the actual tire height is only increasing by .5-.6"
the rim would be decreased by a whole inch in width. thanks for the input though
however does anyone think a 305 will fit on a 10" wide rim without any major bulging?

i just looked at the height difference between a tire with the size of 315/35/17 and a 305/30/19 and the 19 was .7 more than the 17. as far as width the largest tire size recommended for a 10 is 295 but I would imagine you can get away with a 305.

okay... I think it depends on the tire manufacturer then.
The other thing you have to account for is that only half of that is going to play a factor (law of symmetry) in actual clearance issues, so .35 (being half of .7 right?) is all I have to worry about. I think that kind of difference is minimal. As of now I am running a stock rim that has been widened by 2 in. (to the inside of the wheel well).
