As for a "breathing rule", I've never heard of one (anyone else heard of some?). I can't be sure without actually seeing your breathing, but it seems like you are breathing a little too fast. Most of the time when I run I will time my breathing with my footsteps.

    left foot, breath out
    right foot, finish breathing out
    left foot, breath in
    right foot, finish breathing in

Now this is just my pattern, I'm not saying it's for everyone. Try different rhythms and just find the one that doesn't hurt the most.

Colorado is fairly dry most of the time, so it hurts my lungs and drys my throat out. The air is alot thinner up here so it makes it harder to get oxygen, so yeah, running in Colorado kinda sucks. I can run about 16:30 2 miles here, down in South Carolina I ran 2 miles in 15:03, so altitude and humidity really make a huge difference.

I'm not talking like flat out track running a mile, I'm talkin the kind of running youd do on a boardwalk or on the beach, like a fast jog even paced go. I don't even know where to begin to estimate, I have no experience in running what so ever. ie. like in a car, 16 seconds would be a beginners 1/4 mile, 14 would be average, 12 would be fast, 10 and below are pro... you get my generalization
on treadmill, I do 1.0 incline, walk at 4.7 and run at 5.5 or more for 30 mins. I usually warm up with 4.3 walking for about 5 mins and then start running....Occasionally if needed, I will walk at 4.7 to rest. Sometimes I get into cardio burning instead of fat burning and actually have to slow down.

then I keep running and get nice tough callous feet

then I stop all winter and get fat.
Get a good pair of "running socks". Mine are something like $15 a pair, but they let your feet breath and reduce sweat. They also help cushion your feet even more than the sneakers provide. It's a must for any distance runner.

My best time was in high school, the time was from a track meet. It was 5:41. Now its probably in the 7 minute range... but as I said in a previous post, trying to get it back down.

I spent $50 today to fill the tank @ $3.399/gal. I think my feet are worth a tank of gas.
