    ticking

Just a little curious my car has starting making a little ticking noise sounds like a out of adjusted valve. Just curious if this is a common problem or maybe it's normal and I have never really noticed it . THANKS

Ticking could be an exhaust leak but if you have eliminated that possiblity then our cars are prone to valve train noise. Mines pretty loud until it warms up but then quiets down quite a bit.
I dont think its anything too worry about.

I have a 99 T/A and had a extremly loud ticking in mine on cold start-up and after running around town. Got myself a mechanics stethascope(not sure spelling) and pinpointed with side and area on the valves it was comming from. I examined all the push rods from the drivers side and whalla!!! bent push rod exhasts,3rd cyl. back drivers side was bent. replaced with ease. Still have a slight tick in mine but nothing that is too alarming. So i guess you just have to figure out how loud is too loud. if you can hear it on the highway with the windows down criusing at about 70mph might be more than just valve train noise form my small experiance. My little pushrod was bent easily by going over the manufactures redline on accidnet once. At least thats when i noticed it aftwards so i figure that i floated the valve. planing at looking at new valve sprins with opposite coil springs(if i can find any) for each valve in order to avoid harmonic resonance causing valve float in the future.

Well mines not to loud you mainly just notice it in a confined area like a drive-thru or in a garage. And not when cold it does it all the time with 30k maybe it's nothing major!

I have been having the same sort of ticking in my car. I just figured a lifter might be collapsing. Never really thought it might be a bent pushrod.

Mine raps like engine knock when I first start it up....and then it goes away for the most part once it warms up. I have also heard that ls1's are notorious for some "piston slap." I am unsure whether its valvetrain or piston slap though.

My car is also making a couple of ticking sounds when it is cold. After it has been running it does not make one of the two noises, the other is a bit harsher and more of a rattle than a tick and it occurs with differing amounts of severity warm or cold, I'm thinking its either a collapsed Lifter or something in the belt system, a broken bolt or shot bearing.

Well to add on to my previous post I think that I might have another bent pushrod. Not sure just yet have to wait till this weekend to check it out. but I have the exact same sound that I had last time it was a pushrod. The sound never goes away and make me feel stupid driving my "muscle" car and it sounds like i just drove it from the junk yard back lot.

So here's the hundred dolar question then. If it is another bent pushrod....

Well What is causing it. I haven't over revved it. I learned my lesson from the last one i replaced. I have hit high RPM range could a bad/weakend valve spring be the problem. Too mush stress cause the valve spring to weaken therefore causing valve float?

    What esle could cause this?

I am thinking about taking my heads off completly this weekend. Need to find out all the parts that i will need to replace IE gaskets and the such inorder to accomplish this task. Mabye i will wait till next weekend I plan on going to Barona track with some of you west coast guys and gals(?) out here. mabye once i get someone else to listen to her so I can get another good opinion on it.

I dont think that i roke a lifter... Can you even really break those? I guess the roller could break but i would think that would causse alot more irritation then a loud ticking.. probably be the end of the engine if that metal shard started flying around all over inside..

Can the valve springs weaken to cause this issue? If so and I have to replace one should I replace them all?

Can a lifter cause this ticking?

If anyone can shed some light on this... Well it would be a great help.

i broke many pushrods when i was stock.

get a set of comp 918's and chrome moly pushrods, and if you want, get a new cam and be done.

ever since i did the above, ive run my car to 6700rpms 100+ times, and engine is quiet as can be.

    Thanks for the info

So what manufacture should i get for the pushrods? Any particular thing i should look for?

Can i install one aftermarket vavle spring - I think it just might be the one.

Lifters won't cause this right? - I don't really see how they could but you never know....

Still baffeld on what could be causing this.... Hope i didn't bend the vavle this time though. Find out soon enough.... Sigh*

Nice site you lead me to. I've been looking for a site like this. Most of the other out there aren't organized enough, but this one is easy to navigate. Now... how do i choose the right one that will work. I know that my rockers are stock at 1.7...what up with the 1.8...They open wider and fast...not by much i am guessing... are they worth it.. also what springs sizes am i looking for.. what about the spring strength. how strong of a spring can i get? Many more questions but i will start with this. .... mabye i should start a new thread.....

    1.7 is what you want.

comp 918's is pretty common and a great spring until you decide to dig much deeper into things. i'd go with those, good to 600 lift. maybe 650.

chrome moly pushrods of course, stock length.
