really? I've heard in the threads about radios that can use a remote adapter thingy and program it up. The reason for the post is I have read about it, but haven't found any model numbers on radios.

now i'm searching for a wiring diagram for a 99 camaro that will help me create a custom harness for adding the controls. I checked the sticky and there is only one wire in the diagram but my connector has four, hmm... I never realized how much effort adding the radio controls would be.

You should be able to use a device from pac audio to retain your steering wheel controls. They make some for alpine, pioneer and others. You will have to check their site. Google pac audio. I am running the pac swi-x with a clarion headunit.

thanks for the colors, now that takes care of the four wires in the column. The big question is what pin outs do they go to in the back of the radio harness?

that is what i would assume. i would assume it is reading the voltage to figure out what it needs to do. you have four wires and more than four buttons. so that's where i was heding with the whole thing. the main problem is matching the column wires to some where in the car. i assumed all for connected to the main radio harness. now i am not so sure. i'm kind of out on a limb and no references, just scratchin my head.

There are many options available. The SWI-X uses three wires. Power, ground and the wire for the steering wheel controls. You can also email them and find out if your headunit is supported and what adapter you can use.
