Pewter Metallic- 2000 NHRA Trans Am
Help me figure out what this is!
Any idea what this is?? Under the frame rail below the passenger headlight there is a cylindrical module about the size if a coke can. It has a wire or tube that leads out the front and then up near the light. It was cut when the light was ripped out of the car by a deer flying across the hood. Bad deer! He didn't survive.
Anyway, I have all the replacement parts except that. I don't believe it goes to the light module but could be wrong. I don't want to put the light in and then find out that I have to take it out to fix this.
HELP??!!!2000 Trans Am NHRA Special Edition

Not sure what you're talking about, but if it has a vacuum hose going to it sounds like it could be the reserve vacuum canister? TTT for ya.

The hose is a small thick walled black plastic job. I can't see if it has wires in it thiough I think not. It has a rubber boot going into the canister. What would the hose go to?

ok, there are no wires leading into or out of it. just the hard plastic hose. It has 51101 on it, that is all the markings. Again, a plastic cylinder about the size of a energy drink can that is under the frame rail on the passeger side under the light.
Went to the Pontiac place and we looked on BOTH their systems. Old and new. Got lots of views of all the parts but that one. Searches for vacuum and canister turned up nothing. Could someone ask someone in one of the cities dealerships next time you are around one? Please? There are only two T/A's in this section of the state apperantly I haven't had luck finding the other guy.

Think my first instinct was correct - vacuum canister. Here's what it looks like on a LT1 car (note 51101) in the pic. http://shbox.com/1/vac_tank.jpg Maybe it's under "tank" in their description LOL GM calls the driveshaft a "propeller shaft". A good parts guy should've been able to find it for you.

The vac hose/check valve probably wasn't damaged, just follow it along the passenger side from the "tank" - the check valve is on the passenger side near the firewall. My understanding is the reason for vac storage is to ensure you have enough when operating the AC controls. Don't ask me why they put it on the front of the car.
