high idle

Whats up guys,

For the past few months, my 2000 SS has been idling at startup at about 1200rpm and about 1400rpm after driving for a little bit. often this high idle is accompanied by the "ASR OFF" light. the service engine soon light comes on rarely but not enough to get a code off of it.

Any ideas on the idle and the ASR light?

High idle is usually the result of unmetered air entering the engine -- a vacuum leak, defective idle air control (IAC) valve, or faulty throttle position sensor (TPS) are the usual suspects. Take a close look at the PCV hoses on the passenger side of the throttle body, if that appears fine then check out the components on the throttle body.

One more thing to add to Jeff's post:

Follow the PCV around completely. Most of the leaks with this system seem to happen where it Y's behind the intake manifold like so:

If you find that this is the problem you have a couple of ways to fix it.

Post what you find and we'll be able to guide you.

agree with the above posted. When was the last time you cleaned the MAF and the throttle body? The PCV tubing is a common issue with our cars.

its been a while but im pretty sure the MAF and throttle body are clean. I will check the PCV tube. Also, i repaired a leak in the front of the tube and took the time to ensure the little grounding band the attaches to the block then sticks in the tube was in place. Is that thing really needed, the gounding thing that is?

NO it's worthless!! When I did my quick fix I removed it. It does nothing in function of the PCV.

The "ground" strap for the PCV valve acts a support and a heat sink to warm up the valve and keep it from freezing in cold weather. If you don't drive in cold weather, you don't need it.

Ok, it may not be worthless in places north of the Mason Dixie line.
