Catalytic converter help
i recently bought a 98 ws6 and it has headers with a 3in y-pipe and no cats. well, of course, it didn't pass inspection. My question, can i just buy one cat and put it where the two pipes join to one and just have one cat or does it have to go directly behind the headers? Because theres no much piping behind the headers. thanks

well it depends. Did you fail a visual inspection or did you had a check engine light on? If it was visual inspection you will need to have 2 cats. I believe you have to have a cat per manifold or header. Some places won't even pass the visual if you have headers. They were specific about just cats?

Like Jay said was it visual that you failed? or the tailpipe test?
I think the cat would be too far downstream to "light off".
Thats why the OEM's put them so close to the manifolds now.
You could try it,what have you got to lose?
Just make sure you drive your car for a bunch of miles before you go for the test.

Yeah, we'll need more details about exactly what you failed.

If you have a check engine light on, you fail, period. Having your computer retuned will fix that.

I went with 2 small magnaflow Hi-Flow cats just before the t-pipe. Passed the visual and got the rear o2's deleted with a Frost Tune so no concerns of o2 placements. The mini-cats had no clearance problems and cost about $65 each.

Frost and TampaTuning are members on the site that can do mail order tunes.
I have a Frost tune. TampaTuning became a sponsor after I got mine. Both have good reps.
Check in the sponsor tab to get there web sites.
