Break in procedure on a new cam?
According to Comp Cam instructions the break in of a flat tappet cam is now a major deal or the sky will fall????
If you have heads with dual springs you have to remove the center spring and use Comp Cams additive or the cam/flat tappet lifters may be harmed. That's a major pain in the exhaust pipe pulling all the center springs and then replacing them after break in! Also I I bought 6 quarts of a "Break In Motor Oil" with more zinc, etc. to add lubrication for the tappets and cam.
Geez, is all this necessary with a moderate Competition Cam flat tappet cam for a street car like an XE262H or is it their lawyers trying to avoid returns and complaints??? Are modern synthetic oils that bad??
I'm considering breaking in the cam/lifters with the old stock heads single springs using the break in additive and the break in motor oil first, and then changing the heads after the break in. Sounds easier than pulling the center springs on my new Alumn. heads and then replacing them after I break in the cam. I don't see a down side to that.
What do you guys think?

I would most certainly follow their instructions when it comes to a flat tappet cam.
Want to make sure that metal gets heat cycled properly and doesn't wipe a lobe.

I've never disassembled springs to break in any cam. But it may depend on what you've got. What springs, and how are they set up?
