You guys do realize that this is murder on your syncronizers right? not to mention if you are skipping 2 gears and your rpms aren't high enough you are putting stress on your clutch too. jus food for thought.

Yep I skip 5th most of the time. If I am in a zone where I can at least go 45 mph I leave 4th and just go right to 6th gear. 45 mph seems to be the limit for 6th gear with 3.42's.

I rarely ever use 5th gear unless cruising through a 35 mph zone.

WTF says who? i never heard that before. i shift from first to third in the 73 z all the time. as long as the clutch is engaged and the tranny shaft is not spinning what diffrence does it make.

These are slow shifts when we are in traffic and skipping gears. Think about all of the wear you are inducing on the clutch and a dozen more parts if you are using all 5-6 gears everytime.

Not that you wouldn't or don't understand, but you don't drive a 6 speed everyday.

i think i've only skipped gears a few times...usually from 4th to 6th but that's about it. got the skip shift eliminator so i wouldn't get pissed every time i drove the car. normally i don't skip gears though.

It is hard on the clutch if you are putting the engine under heavy constant load which is bad for the engine too. Skipping gears is for fuel efficiency and when all gears are not necessary.

like i said before 18 mpg mixed driving, hitting all the gears and shifting normally around 2000rpms

Well sometimes I would be in first gear and stress it to about 3 grand or so around 30-40 and then i would just shift into 3rd or 4th? Is that bad?

No, you are doing it correct, but you wanna make sure these are easy shifts.

But you are still putting alot of wear on the clutch and other components.

    ^Great response hehe

When you say make sure they are easy shifts, you mean nice and slow right?

Yes, nice and slow allows the components to syncronize.

Odly enough, my friend Manuel does skip some shifts... in his 300ZX TT...

and I do too in the Vett... cause I'm just too lazy to go through all 6 gears... while cruising... usually go from 1rst to 2nd to 4th and then to 6th...

Theres 2 main shafts in a manual input and output, With the clutch Engaged both will be turning. With it disengaged ( your foot pressing it in) only the output will be moving. the difference is when you skip shift, from say 2nd to 4th, you are going from a gear that is spinning real fast, to a gear that is spinning much slower and the syncronizers have to match this and this puts a lot of wear and tear on it. versus going 1 gear at a time. your clutch will get excessive wear if you lug the engine into high a gear at too low an rpm.

hope this explains my point a lil bit better guys

Why is it always the ford guys who know what they are talking about, so basicly, what your saying is no matter what gears you skip it fucking up the clutch quicker? So its not worth the gas savor?
I was also reading the book or whatever its called that came with the car and there is a section that talks about skipping gears for the best gas mileage. At certain speeds
