how can i get the right resistance values? do you think i have the wrong meter? To get 6040 ohms how do i go about getting resistors adding up to that do i just buy some and use as many as it takes to get 6040 ohms?

I just ordered GM VATS Bypass Kit off amazon!! So when I get the resistors what do i set the meter on to see if i got 6040 ohms? Do i set it to 20k or 200k? Can i twist the resistors to the wire and tape them up with electrical tape or do they have to be soldered? Will it take more than one resistor? I hope 6040 ohms is right and i really appreciate both of you guys help!!!! Thanks so much words can't explain how grateful i am whether it works or not thanks!!!

I will set your meter in the "ohms" with the 10k rating. As far as how many resistors you need from the kit will depend in the values included. So let say they included a 5k resistor and a few 500's then you will need one 5k and two 500's to equal 6k. The way they add up is you have to connect them in series, meaning one after the other( like you want to make a big straight line). I soldered the connections between each resistor while leaving the end that will connect to the harness on the same side and it's up to you if you want to cut the car plug and solder them.
When i did mine I used 3 resistors I put them next to each other (kinda forming a pellet) and I twist the wires making sure they were in series. I solder the ends and cut the excess. Then i wrapped the resistor in electrical tape and install it.

My meter starts at 200 and then 2000 an then it goes to 20k to 200k to 2000k!! Will this meter still work? Do i set it at 20k to check and see if i got the 6040 ohms? Also you said a 5k and two 500's equal 6k so will it work at 6k without the other 40 ohms? So do i just have to get it as close to 6040 ohms as possible and it will work? If i am not able to soldered them can i just twist them together and tape them up? When you say in series do you mean the 5k then the 500's after? So what ends should I be twisting with the wires that connect to the vats the 5k end of the resistor and a 500k end? Sorry don't mean to ask so many questions just trying to get it right the first time I appreciate your help!

Don't worry about questions that's what this forum is all about. Yes put the meter at 20k setting. I will say that if you the resistors to 6k it should work. you can twist them but if they get loose they will lose connection so make sure they are tight. Here is a pic on how a set of resistors are connected in series(disregard the values)

Does the resistor go all the down easily or do you have to force it? I can't get mine to go all the way down in there what am i doing wrong?

well i tried it and my car still wouldn't start so I guess mt problem is something else!! I got the Gm VATS kit and it had all the resistors so all i had to do was get the 6040 one out the pack and try it and I still didn't get my car to start. Do you think maybe the 6040 resistor is the wrong one? Or is something else wrong with my car?

I double checked my key again and I'm still getting 00.5 @ 200k and 0.52@ 20k!! what do you do to figure out the resistance? What is done with these number to get the resistance? well i tried it and my car still wouldn't start so I guess mt problem is something else!! I attempted to do this because I was having an intermittent security light/no start issue, I OHMed my key out and got 4.69K which I took to be #11 key on the chart. I did the bypass by cutting the white wires on the key cylinder side like many here have done and putting the resister in between the wires and plugging it back into the harness. I tested the plugs in the connector and got 4.75-4.76K
The weird thing is, it would not start and the security light came on right away with the resister in place, I re-measured my key and my resister and they match up almost perfectly. I left the harness completely unplugged with NO resister and now my car starts fine with No security light, WTH is this?
the car now starts and runs with no security light with the harness unplugged and no resister

its a 97 V6 Bird. I got it at 110K and my sister had it a few years before that, as far as I know,no bypass has been done and I could see no evidence of it at all at the harness. I have been driving it all week with the harness unplugged so im not really worried anymore.
When I was checking for resistance at the two white ignition wires with the key in the ignition I couldnt get any reading at all and I tried the key in several positions..nothing.
Its possible somebody disabled it further down the line, but if thats the case, why was I having security light/no start issues in the first place. Havent had any problems since I unplugged it.

very weird for sure......my bet is you'll be revisiting this fix at some point. The only possible guess I would have is that someone did the bypass somewhere and there's a loose wire or something. That's reaching quite a bit for a guess but there's really no good reason why unplugging it would fix the light.

Hi, new member here. Im having similar probems as well. Randomly it wont start, usually when im not home. Lol. Sometimes it takes 3 tries sometimes 50 tries. But my light does not stay on, comes on when I turn the key then goes out after about 5 seconds. Does this sound like a vats problem? Or will the bypass work?

It could be but it doesn't really sound like a VATs problem. You could just do the bypass to help eliminate that as a cause.
