For the parts you might have to go to GM. The power steering cooler is the big part in the radiator hose, in between the motor and radiator on the drivers side. Sorry on pics.

It looks like just part of the radiator hose until you look a little closer and notice the power steering hoses going to it. I didn't realize this for a while myself until I saw a diagram one day and then went and took a closer look.

I just went through the same thing with my 01 T/A. The guy who helped me replace the P/S pump decided to bypass that cooler and go with a Transmission cooler instead.
There's a link off of ProjectTransAm that should help you with this incase you're interested. The car that this was done on is a 98 Z28. I hope this helps.

i REALLY appreciate all the help - i guess i found it, the whole ordeal just seems crazy, being even possible to have power steering fluid pumped into the radiator is nuts!!! hopefully i'll be back on the road soon
thanks again

You are not driving a typical car despite it being a Chevrolet. Not all cars have power steering coolers.

Shoot, not even all LS1 f-bodies have the power steering cooler.

Really? Which ones don't?

Well, mine for one. I'm not sure if it was dependant on year, or options, or what. I think that maybe the ws6 and SS got them for sure but this is kind of a curious question. Anyone know for sure the rhyme or reason for the cars with or without steering coolers?

WS6, Firehawk, and SS = Mandatory option
T/A, Formula, and Z-28 = Option
RPO # V12
Not sure about the V6 cars

Well I learn something new every day-I assumed because my car had one that all LS1 F-bodies did. My car has almost all the options (missing the power antennae and 6 disc CD changer) so today I learned it has other options I didn't know were optional. Thanks for the info!

Just ran across something to deepen the mystery possibly. I have an options list that I copied back in 2001 (before I bought my 2002 Z-28) that lists the power steering cooler as standard equipment in the Z-28. It shows that when you went from the 'base coupe' (V-6) to the Z-28 (LS1) you got the power steering cooler automatically (along with other standard Z-28 stuff). Just thought this was interesting and remembered this thread. Any thoughts?

I had the same problem with my 99 WS6. After 3 different pontiac dealers and a lot of loot I was told that a coolant line in the radiator hose had ruptured and thats how my system was getting contaminated. My coolant dipstick looked like it had been dipped in elmers glue.

Tony180a,
How did you go about getting your system cleaned out? Did a simple flush and fill get the job done? Did you do it yourself with a Prestone flush/fill kit or did you take it in to a shop and have it done?
