Howling coming from rear
I've got what seems like a howling sound coming from what I think is my rear. I did a break job last week and I only driven it twice since. Both times when I get above 50 it starts to come and go. At 70-80 it becomes more constant. I've done several hard braking and have not had any grinding or pulling so I not sure if it's a break issue.
Ideas:
1) Brake Caliber is sticking? (I'm going to check this first.)
2) Rear is fixing to go boom?
3) Wheel hub or bearings?
4) Something else?

I take it the car did not make the noise before the brake job? If not, I would be suspecting the brakes.

Update, I was looking around underneath and a walk around looking for leaks, stuff hanging.
My rear wheels look almost solid black from break dust. Both sides. I'll jack it up this weekend and see what goes.

Check your brakes. And if they are fine, then your rear is letting you know it is time to replace it.

wouldn't I feel that (axle walk)? I get no shimmy or vibrations at all. That's what is so weird.

did you adjust your e brake? if not then check the pins 1st like mentioned. what exactly you replace in the BRAKE job. Did you took off the master cylinder cap when you back off the calipers?

The howling is bad enough that I heard it over headers and with the T-tops going 80.
I'm not sure I'm describing quite right by saying it's a howling sound. More like a rubbing or a dragging sound

well what happens is that if you dont take the cap off your are forcing that hydralic fluid back into the master cylinder. Since the cap is on and is air tight there is no space to create room for the fluid that needs to come back. I mean it will create room but You can bust the o rings in the master cylinder.
I will try to take the cap off. Fill to proper level if needed. Then open the bleeder of the back wheels and let it flow for a few seconds. Make sure you dont run out of fluid or you will get air in the system. Re fill to proper level and check them again. I will still check the pins and make sure they are free.
I did damage a master cylinder once because I didn't took the cap off when i back in the calipers. I destroyed the o rings.Last edited by JayTA98; 06-10-2011 at 09:56 AM.

I'll have to do that when I get home. That was my plan to see which wheel was dragging. I'm beginning to think it is the fluid pressure because I did forget to take the cap off. I was in a hurry and doing 2 projects at same time. So yeah I hate to say it I rushed it.

Jay's the winner of how stupid can SMWS6TA be today.....
I just got back from a 40 mile test drive. I think it's fixed, did various speeds and braking and no sound. Thank God!!
Seems Jay was right, as soon as I open the cap I heard a burp sound and a hiss of air. I can't believe it still, that I forgot such a simple step.
At lease it's not a rear going out.
