    Very little 93 around here.

Mine only gets 91 unless I come across a station with 93. VERY rare though.

What are the lower grades? I thought they were lower to compensate for lower pressure
we have 87, 89, 93. 89 Is kinda useless except when i'm hauling alot, pings a little with the a/c in the heat. Don't feel like adjusting it more

As little as you drive it...that 91 is probably 86 by the time you use it up.

I can't wait until I'm older so I can use the word "decade" condescendingly towards younger generations as I tell them of past experiences.

yeah there's a local station here that sells 106? They're right beside a half-mile oval track though. You aren't allowed to pump directly into a vehicle though, only into approved containers

    Bandimere has that.

Best 'pump gas' around is a local Conoco that has 104 (if I recall).

I know of a few ricers (well, they are 4cyl cars lol) that were getting 116? and running that at the track. One guy (Eclipse GSX) ran 11.9's. He's not been to the track in a number of years though.

When I was at sand dunes last, the local gas station had 110 pump gas. 5 bucks a gallon, but you could drive your sand rail right to the pump.

But when you can run almost 13:1 these days on premium there isn't a big need in n/a cars

You don't already? My nephew is 18 and I use that on him all the time, "a decade ago you were...." even though my his mother is 12yrs older than me and he's only 10 yrs younger

Still can't believe it's running. Looking forward to going for a ride with the debil mouse nibbling at my toes.

BTW -- good article on high octane fuel in GMHTP. Condensed version -- running a higher octane race fuel in our cars generally does not increase power (and may actually decrease power) unless you adjust the command air fuel (stoich) and timing tables to accommodate the fuel. That is when you can experience gains. This being said, our cars do have both high and low octane timing tables that the PCM utilizes -- so there is a performance difference between 87 and 93 octane.

Man, I hate all of this fuel talk, that is one concept about motor's i will never fully grasp. It just happens to be one of the very few things about car's that won't compute with me whatsoever.

I need to get some fresh fuel in my car soon. I put some lucas injector cleaner in just before pouring some 2 month old 87 into the tank to get it running.

higher octane can handle the ignition being lit off sooner and more compression before it pops. More compression and ignition makes for more power. Alcohol (like ethanol) is a double whammy, it cools off the charge which again means more compression (or boost).

oh, and the mouse is gone. Been gone for a year or so. He never came back after I kilt him in a trap early last winter. Got one, never had another.

I've got a curiously soaked drivers side floor though. Under the floor mat is entirely wet. Not coolant, not mouse piss, just water. A/C needs recharged so it wasn't that. Hardtop, so not a t-top leak. I'm guessing window seal on drivers side, but it's been so damn dry that rainwater doesn't make sense. I will have to pull the cowling off and check there, as the only recent water on the car was me running the pissers and cleaning the windshield off with a squeegee.

has anyone heard of a rear window seal issue on a firebird/formula? No leaks, but water is always pooled up there

    Fuel 101:

Octane simply reflects a fuel's resistance to pre-ignition, otherwise known as "knock". If the air-fuel mixture ignites before the piston has reached the proper location in the cylinder bore, it rattles the piston and cause the noise you hear. Higher octane fuels are resistant to pre-ignition, but they also burn more slowly once ignited. Therefore, you need to advance the timing to take advantage of the higher octane fuel.

Air-fuel ratios are described as lean, stoichiometric or rich. Stoichiometric is generally defined as 14.68 parts of air for every part of fuel, so 14.68:1. That is the optimum ratio to ensure a complete burn. If it is lean, there is to much air in the mixture and rich is too much fuel. Lean also leads to spark knock under load as the mixture ignites easier in an abundance of oxygen.

Adding things to the fuel, such as ethanol, changes the stoich point. A fuel containing 10% ethanol actually has a stoich of 14.2:1, meaning that it needs more fuel. Hence E85, which is 85% ethanol, needs to have an air-fuel ratio around 9.6:1 for proper combustion. That's why the guys that run E85 in the magazines have to ramp up their fuel systems.
