Green coolant

I have completly flushed out my cooling system so that now all thats in it is straight water. I plan on putting the green coolant in it but wanted to make sure it was safe to do so. i know you cant mix Dexcool and the green stuff but the dexcool is all out. I know if you put green coolant in the 6.0 ford diesels it eats the finish off the aluminum heads and turns hard as a hard, i just want to make sure it wont do this to my car seeing as how its all aluminum.

As long as you have completely flushed the system you will be fine. Most people dont like dexcool and switch it out for the green stuff. Either way coolant is coolant, as long as you have the proper mixture.

what is the problem with dexcool? never heard that before.

Did you drop your block drains on both sides? Even with the thermostat out there is quite a bit of coolant left in the block.

+1. Nothing wrong with it. You do want to keep your mixture close to 50/50, whatever you use. Pure coolant freezes around -9, too high a concentration (over about 60% coolant) and you can have localized hot spots bc the heat transfer is not as effective, and if you don't have enough coolant mixed with the water the metals and seals will corrode a lot quicker. I use 50/50 Dexcool/RO water.

The "Green" coolant plays havoc on the newer aluminum radiators, it should be used on the older copper cored units.

I have not heard if this either -- everything except our Trans Am has an aluminum radiator and is running the green stuff.

I think the only rule you must play by is not to mix green coolant with DexCool. If you change from one to the other, flush the system real good, including the overflow tank and heater core. Regular cooling system maintenance is also a must. Changing the coolant every 2-3 years is probably best, even thought they now advertise "extended life". As long as you do not leave it in for an excessive period of time you should be fine with whichever type you choose.

Your link basically says the same thing I did in post #6, change your coolant according to what the manufacturer recommends, and that no matter what kind of coolant you use, change it before the anti-corrosion properties are depleted. Except, of course, if you are running a Cummins engine in your F-body.

Obviously you don't want to mix the different types of coolant, if you do I've always heard/read that you must follow the time recommendation for the sooner of the two. For example, if someone added green to dexcool, you must then flush around every two years.

Zerex G05 is pretty good stuff, and is supposed to be really good for aluminum parts. When I swap motors in my truck, that's what's going in in place of the DexCool.

I could pick apart that entire article. Its ALL BS and one reason people think Dex-Cool is bad.

I knew this would end up as an arguement about coolants types. but after flushing it one more time then adding coolant i now have a severe leak coming from the back of the water pump i think. its running right down where the thermostat housing is. i already replaced the thermostat gasket hoping thats what it was but that didnt fix anything

We have had no problem with dexcool in cars and busses until something is mixed with it. A mr. bentwrench put some of the brown coolant sealer in a bus with dexcool. Turned the pink into chocolate milk with clumps. These clumps clog the reater cores and vavles. Lots of flushing and refilling. Straight dex and no problem for us.
