How to Bypass your VATS

Does your odometer go all crazy? Mine did exactly what you described, but my odometer when nuts and flickered all kinds of numbers. As well as VATS. Ended up being 2 things for me, my battery died and 2 of plug wires wiggled themselves off.

No, its weird, nothing happens at all except for the bulb on the dash flashes rapidly when the key is not in the ignition. I checked a the connections to the battery and the battery is less than a month old. I'm lost

Had a start problem with my car a while ago. I've been researching/tearing into it over the last two months. I found an exposed wire on my lock cylinder however I haven't ohm checked it (for shits and grins). I'm sure that is what is causing my problem.

Right now I'm debating on wether to do the by-pass or fix the cylinder. The cylinder is exposed right now. Thing is, I know I will have to have a new key cut. But if I get a new key cut, can I still use the same resistor setting or will there be a new setting once I change out the cylinder? Or is the resistance setting programmed into the BCM?

A new cylinder last I checked costs almost $300. I think it comes with a new key but not sure.
As for the new key, it has to be the same resistance as the older one since the value is stored in the BCM.
If you got to a key cutting place for autos, most likey they will have the tool that tests your old key resistance value and tells you what # GM key you need to get a duplicate. It ranges from 1 to 10.

Or do the bypass and forget about it.

Wow! I've never seen them cost that much. Found some a lot cheaper at Autozone, etc. Unless, there is something I am overlooking. I know I need the #10 pellet for my key. Just didn't know if I had to get a new one with a new cylinder. I'm glad I don't should I decide to change it.

That's the cost of the OEM key cylinder at the GM dealer. Plus install labor, it would end up costing $600.

I think it does come with a key because it wouldn't make any sense to not include a key with the cut unknown.
Also when you order a new key cylinder for the steering column, there's 10 different part #'s related to the value # of the key currently installed. There's a note in that section stating to match the # of the key first before ordering.

The autozone key cylinder has a button lock on it in order to remove or turn the key.

A GM replacement cylinder comes with a key with no pellet. A key copy (with the correct pellet) has to be made from that one at an extra cost.

Yeah, no working with the stealerships here. I'm doing this work on my own. I'm dealing with carlocksandkeys.com to get my keys and lock. Haven't ordered it yet though.

I'm curious though, I have heard that there was a TSB about the wires on the cylinder lock cutting themselves and that there was a replacement one with thicker wires or something like that. Is that true or just random crap floating on the internet?

All the cylinders I've done in the past using GM replacement cylinders seemed to be the same gauge wiring. So I say thats random internet crap!

Tried removing the old cylinder, attached some wire to aid in routing the wires when I install the new one. The plug won't fit through the steering wheel column. It has some stupid plastic piece that constricts the pathway. No plug will fit through there, only the wires.

Any idea on how to remove it? I don't want to yank off screws that I don't need to. My Chilton's doesn't even talk about it. Thier car doesn't have the plastic piece.

Is it the white plastic piece at the bottom of the column? if so that peice is removable. It just slides out and you can basically throw it away.

Yeah, I took another look at it, it looks like it will slide out but it's pretty stuck in there. Took a break becasue the lamp gets hot and it's hot as hell right now. Believe me, I'll throw that crap away once I get it out.

Took a bit of work but it did pop out of there, now it's in the trash.

like to add this just happened to me and it only cost .25 to get it fixed took my key down to radio shack ohmed it bought a resistor and off i go again .... well add in the tow cost too but my insurance covered alot of it

I think (knock on wood) that my resistors just are a little loose, cause tonight my car just cranked over for the first time since I put the resistors in. Now my security light is on and not going off. I only had a 2 mintue drive home tonight so I don't think it had time to shut down on me. Going to undo the electrical tape tomorrow and reinsert the resistors. Will this fix the security light? If not, what will get it to shut off?

Once its running the security system won't shut the car down. You should solder those resistors in so they don't come loose.

secure those resistors. Also, how close to your median number did you get with those resistors? There are gold band and silver band resistors.... gold has a 5% tolerance and silver has a 10% tolerance.

I solder whenever I can.....it's a much better way of doing things. On this bypass it was simple to do. I cut the wires on the bcm side of the plug and soldered my resistors across the plugs wires and then just plugged it back in.

Hey Guys, We are from Holland and use a LS1 engine in our prototype.

We bought the v8 engine and the ignition seperately. Is there a way to analyze our resistance value, my key has 2357 key nr# 8 but it won't start so i guess i'll have to bypass it with a resistance which corresponds with the computer, how can i read the value out of the computer in order not to test all 15?
