Ya I've heard that but just don't buy into it. Especially since GM removed the screen in the later years anyway.
No need to tune often though,,,once the MAF table is dialed in you leave it alone. It's not that big of deal really. Just a few logs and simple math and it's done.

If you take the screen out, make absolutely sure that the lid fits perfect with NO LEAKS. I used a drop light stuck up in the air box with the lights out to check for leaks and have had no problem so far, good luck.

I have never had a screen on any of my MAF's, long as it is tuned for and you have an air filter, you will have no issues!

My .02.... anyone is a retard for wanting to do this. it protects the sensor. that alone should be enough to convince you to just leave it there vs .00001 hp.
You may gain a little hp at wot ( probably because the ecm will still have to adjust to the slight difference in flow) at peak power but down low you will lose and in daily driving where throttle is opening and closing constantly and the screen helps keep turbulence at a minimum.
Spend money where its needed not stupid mods like this.

It's ridiculous anyway... A bolt-ons car (which are all of the guys that are OBSESSED WITH SCREWING WITH THEIR MAFs) MIGHT pickup 2 HP with the screen out AND tuning.
FACT: If you remove the screen, the reported airflow is lower making your car run leaner in OL and at WOT.

I have had 3 fbodyies within the last 8 yrs. All ported MAF No problems. Actually I just ported Mine yesterday and it has a deeper idle tone to it now. You just cant touch those little wires inside. Thats were the problem lies. Make sure it gets tuned and you will have no problems JMO.
