Chevelle SS 454
Yea, old muscle is awesome needless to say. The cars back then had alot of great personality. Ok, so I'm heading down Rt.18 and see a green 454 that looked like he was coming from a car show. It was cammed and had exhaust at the very least. So I see it's a older guy with his kid in the passenger seat and thought he wouldn't go. Well, once he saw me pacing him he got on it and smiled. Well the second I get next to him we catch a red light. My friend is laughing in the passenger seat knowing what was next. Green light, we both hit it and spin through 1st. 2nd gear I had him by 1 car, 3rd gear I had him by 3 cars. I shutdown at 110mph. He was pissed and took the next exit w/ out giving me my hard earned thumbs up. I drove slowly thinking "WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!?"... Mods in sig...

I'm not surprised at the outcome, considering your mods. We're also assuming it IS an LS6 454. Unless you know the car personally, you can't be certain. I've known several guys who had 396 SS's and badged them as 454s. Even if he had the big motor, I'd expect you to give him trouble, unless he was pretty well built.
As far as "the fastest production car of it's time" goes, I don't know about that. I think it depends on what magazine you read. I spoke to my dad about this today. My dad had a 1970 Chevelle SS with the 450 horsepower LS6 454, rock crusher, and 4.10s. He was big into street racing and the dragstrip at the time. He told me the Chevelles with the LS6 option were among the fastest production cars, but he said the 440 Six Pack Mopars gave him ALOT of trouble. He also mentioned that ANY Mopar with a Hemi worried him. He said that Hemi cars were temperamental, and many were not kept well-tuned, and those not in a good state of tune weren't much of a challenge, but hemis whose owners kept them well tuned were beasts. He said, still, that back in the day, when he lined up with one, he didn't assume it was one of the slow ones.....he PRAYED it was! He also mentioned the Stage 1 Buicks were bad, too. In any case....NICE KILL!

NBM / Silver- 00 SS / 71 SS Elcamino
I don't know what he had, Maybe a stock LS5, however my 71 SS elcamino with a built 402 big block (10.5:1 compression, edelbrock rpm airgap with matching cam, Demon 750 CFM, reworked heads, roller rockers, and protronix hei distributor), headers, true duels, Built th-400 with shift kit and 3500 stall, and a 12 bolt 3.73 posi will absolutely destroy my camaro. I run high 13's (In Denver, 5400 ft above sea level) with the Camaro. Low 13's with the El camino. Both cars use street tires. I know I could run consistant 12's with slicks in my Camino. I don't dare run slicks with my stupid 10 bolt in the camaro.
Not to take anything away from your win, However I have had 3 big block chevelles, (67 ss 427 4 speed, 71 402 th-400, and my 71 ss elcamino) and they could all smoke my camaro. However none where stock.Last edited by Jays00ss; 09-21-2007 at 09:37 PM.
2000 SS Camaro Heads, Large cam, Fast 90, 9"w/430's and locker, yada yada yada... you get the picture

Car could have had a stock or mild LS 5. In any case, many people into the 60s, early seventies iron(like my dad) believe automotive performance died after 1971. It's nice that you got the chance to make a believer out of him, although he probably thinks you were running giggle gas. Truth is, it really doesn't take too much to get an LS1 F-body to run with even an LS6 454, if it's stock. I'd venture to say it was an LS 5, as the LS6s weren't exactly as common as 5.0 Stangs. Regardless....nice kill!

Nice kill, I had a 70 SS 454 #'s matching stocker other than headers. It ran 13.6 to 13.7. It's funny that the last three GTP's I had would have killed it. I love modern performance. I never should have sold the SS but it came down to selling the SS or the GN and the GN won. Modern performance is more my style. The GN went on to run 10's after the SS went away. Still have the GN.

Maybe it was nice to race a Chevelle because those cars are awesome, but honestly, I would take that car over any newer car today, including the fbodies. My buddies dad has a 71 SS Chevelle and my buddy has a 70 Monte with alot of work done to the 400ci sitting under the hood. I could outrun them both all day when I had my Camaro. But I personally don't think that driving any new car can compare to driving/ riding in an older muscle car. Just my 2cents, but nice race none the less.

I have an original motor 1970 SS454 with an LS5 and I chose to restore it to nearly original and rebuild the engine so it will run on pump gas. Today, my Hawk would beat it hands down. When I got it in 1981, in high school, I took out all the extra weight, put in a huge cam and predator carb, headers, shift kit and set up like that, it would have eaten my Hawk.
Both cars have their own personalities, but there is just something heart pounding about flooring a big, solid, metal musclecar and feeling the response. Nice kill though, If I had been there, I would have run you too.

Nice! I'd bet it was also probably an LS5. Not because any power or whatever bu just the fact that the LS6 Chevelles are some rare pieces. Don't surprise me in the least. I ran a 71 Camaro with a transplanted built 454 (although it was running rough and he had to tear it all down) and got him by like a fender to 120 ish. His 4 speed and 4.10s definately didnt help him on a highway run vs a decently modded LS1 with 2.73's

Why shoul you have lost you have a mid 12 second car, most 454 SS Chevelles have trouble running 12s, it take alot of power to get them there.

well on what knight stalker said those 440's were tough cars and hemi's were awesome but the reason why the LS6 454 was known as the highest rated production engine was the hp AND torque combined. pontiac had the 455 which i believe had a slight higher torque rating but the hp wasnt as near. and they claimed that the LS6 was underrated as it was b/c of insurance issues. second they did an actual 1/4 mile comparison (but not with the LS6) between 10 of high performance models and the 69 440 super bee w/ 2 x 3 bbl had the fastest 0-60 time. the 70 GTO judge however was crowned the victor. which kind of shocked me. and the yenko camaro in 2nd. but what i got a kick out of was the shelby gt 500 that came in dead last... and the super bee in 3rd. im pretty sure its still on youtube.

I think that GTO was a special tweaked version. It had better traction than the others.
