6th gear popping out? HELP!
Hey guys.. I got this car about 4 months ago(in profile), and I got it with the clutch petal sticking to the floor under WOT or even sometime just normal day driving.. Well when I first got it all the gears shifted fine other than the clutch petal would stick on me every now and then... But over these past 4 months my 6th gear and only 6th gear has been slowly acting up and getting worse.. It started by popping out a few times at like 55mph and now even 75mph it pops out just about Every Time.. If I try a few times (5 or so) I will hear a grind, and then it will go into 6th gear and drive like nothing happened (it will even come out of 6th gear like normal)... You can automatically tell when it hits too.. SO what is my problem guys? I have a LS7 clutch and all new hydrolics setting in the garage I just haven't tore it down yet because I haven't had time.. I don't see having bad hydrolics making the 6th gear pop out and only 6th.. All my other gears shift fine, I wanted to say clutch fork, but isn't 5th and 6th the same fork?
BTW I feel like I only own a 5 speed.. I never use 6th anymore

I know you said every thing is new but the clutch dropping to the floor really sounds like a slave or master cylinder leak. I'd take a close look at both and check the fittings on them. As for the popping out of 6th gear, I'm not really sure on that. I've heard of alot of popping out of reverse and 3rd but not 6th.
Good Luck,
Brian

The clutch and slave are NOT new.. I have new one's setting in the garage that haven't went in it... I am sure that the new hydrolics will fix the clutch sticking problem.. But I don't see it fixing 6th gear... AND you reminded me that when I put it into reverse sometimes it doesn't always engage right and pops out

I forgot to mention. I don't know if you have an aftermarket shifter or not but some aftermarket ones' like hurst and pro 5.0 have stop bolts that keep you from jamming gears and damaging the tranny. They may be set to tight so it can't fully get into gear. You may need to adjust them out. Good luck with it.

i had the same experience with the shifter popping out of gear. i read somewhere online that these cars(at least in 02') came with an aluminium shift fork that sometimes bends. i took it to the dealership and they replaced it with a steel one, under warranty : ) it worked fine after that.

Whats up Steel, been a while since I've spoke with you, best advice I can give is to go ahead and replace the clutch system, this could fix your popping out of gear if the clutch is not fully disengaging, if it doesn't then you could be looking at a bent fork. I have experienced that once, but it was with 5th turned out to be a bad synchro. If it is in your tranny, then let me suggest upgrade, hardened synchros, while you are in there.

I have had similar problem with my car but much worse than your experience. I bout my car during winter when it was cheap and had a pickup and never drove it till snow was gone. The 3rd time i drove it i started losing random gears only 2-6 gears though. Also sometimes i completely lost a gear or it would pop out just like ur experiencing. I took my car to 3 tranny shops and they all said they needed me to pay $500 to pull the tranny and take a look ignorant
. So i just said to myself something doesnt seem right if it were the tranny the gears wouldnt come and go like that so i ended up calling a t-56 specialist and immediately he told me it was the clutch. So i bought a spec 3 had it put in for free and guess what all the gears were fine and shifted smoothly. I also replaced the master and slave while tearing it apart. I dont know if this helps much but i have a post about it called "shift problems" and i believe u have clutch problems just my 2 cents though.

all i was saying is if u have the factory aluminum shift fork then try getting a steel one, the aluminum ones tend to bend causing the shifter to pop out of gear. sorry i tried to help.... hope ur problem aint that simple : )

The 5th/6th fork has always been iron . The only replacement would be another iron one. Gear jump outs are not caused by the clutch engagement. It is safe to say that the problem is in the trans and can be a bent fork, damaged fork pads or damaged drive gear clutch teeth or a combination of all of these.

Im sorry but i would have to disagree, gear pop outs can be caused by the clutch i experienced it first hand. As i stated above i lost all my bottom gears randomly somtimes 2nd somtimes 6th and so on. As this continued it would just pop out of gear while cruising down the interstate or even in 4th during town driving. I called a t-56 specialist and he said right away THE CLUTCH i replaced it and what do u know everything worked perfect and i have no tranny problems what so ever.

[QUOTE=SteelmanLS1;909795]Yes I dont disagree that you could have a tranny problem 30thbird could very well be correct I just wanted to state that you may also have a clutch problem because i was only losing 1 gear at first then as the clutch worsened i lost all bottom gears. It did exactly what you are explaining for awhile then just got worse for me.

I am going to take TACE's advice... and just replace my clutch, hydraulics like I planned to.. and if it doesn't fix 6th gear I will just save up some money and get my T-56 rebuilt
