coolant temp??

so i was crusing around town today with the vette and w/e i stopped a few times and shut the car off. as i am going home i wanted to see what she does so i nail it get up to 160 170 than light comes on check gauges my coolant temp is in the red so i slow down stop and shut the car off next thing i notice there is steam coming from under the hood i pop it and its leaking out off the cap. so i waited till it stopped started the car back up and it went down too 220 225 and drove it home and never went above 230 i think was the tops when i slowed down to turn onto my road. anyone else have this? any advice.
