laptop advice
I need the name of a computer or computer component to look for when I purchase my laptop. I basically want to be able to watch any video from the internet including HD without all the pausing. The only other thing that I may do in the future is run HP tuners. That's about it. I have an old desktop for pictures. I don't play games. All help is appreciated.

Need to know your budget. Right now, the new Dell Studio XPS line is badass! The new RGB-LCD screens are niiiiiice. Any gaming? If no, your fine with integrated video.

If you have the equipment (HDMI connector), and enough memory, and fast enough display, and a properly streamlined operating system, it should not be a big deal. If you have anti-virus scanning things that are not necessary, outdated drivers, and a lot of background processes, you may have issues even with top of the line hardware.
I am going to set this up on my wife's desktop sometime soon but she has 8G of ram and Vista Ultimate 64 bit....
You are asking about a laptop and they generally are less likely to be configured for this type of stuff, especially with all the power savings stuff enabled by default.2002 Street ET Champion New England Dragway

I don't really have a budget. I just don't want to spend more than I have to because I don't know what I want. When I say watch movies, I'm basically referring to youtube 5 min clips that are filmed in HD. I have a 120in screen for the real movies. My current computer pauses when trying to watch films from the track. I'm familiar with HDMI inputs but honestly I don't plan on hooking this thing up to a television. So, basically I guess I'm asking what do I need to look for that will allow my internet to run as fast as possible and view everything on the web?

Well then... A fast processor, good graphics card and at least 4g of RAM. That ought to do it
Oh, and if you're on dial up... nothing will help

If you want to handle Steaming videos (like youtube) from the internet, the only things you need are a broadband internet and if you are watching streaming HD, it would help to have a videocard that supports codeing HD formats.
If you are talking about movies and vids on your computer (HDD) then a faster hard drive, ram, videocard and a good sound card is what you are looking for.
Going back to your OP, if you are only interested in making the "pausing" go away, that boils down to internet connection. Nine times out of ten it has nothing to do with your computer (but having nice parts doesnt hurt). Or you could try watching the vids from websites that give you more bandwith.

Sounds to me like your internet is the bottleneck. I have 2 fast PC's and one slow ass AMD 3200+ and they all play HD from youtube just fine, due to the fact i have an 8mb connection. If you wants a new lappy. get the new Dell Studio XPS line with the RGB-LCD screen. You wont be disappointed. If you want, give me a budget and a PM and I can throw u together one online and send u a link.

I agree with the internet connection as stated above.
I have a cable connection & can run You Tube clips from my 10 year old Compaq that has only 512 megs of ram & a 20 meg HD.

As said, specs of the laptop really won't matter about the 'pauses'. It's all about your download speed. And some of that is dependent on your provider, the other is dependent on the site that you're downloading from.
You can have a fiber optic connection, but if the site you're downloading from has tons of concurrent users or is just slow to begin with, it won't matter.
Also, if whatever you're downloading isn't in an HD format, it won't matter.

Thanks guys, understood. Funny thing though, I called gateway and the sales rep could offer no advice. He seemed to be reading from flowcharts. I'm guessing that he wasn't in the U.S. at all.
