SLP air lid/weatherstip problem...

Hey all,

I've been driving with my SLP air lid since the begining of summer. I have installed in right and it works fine. Only problem I have right now is, when I check the air filter, I noticed that the weatherstrip got sucked up to lid and before the MAF screen (another reason to keep it on). I have replaced it with anoter peice of foam weatherstipping. I put it on the end of the lid, just before the tabs like SLP said. Has anyone else encountered this problem and is there a fix?

ignore the masking tape used hot glue to secure it better...


that's lasted for about 5000 pretty much all highway miles, definitely more air tight than before, have a 'sssssshhhhhhh' sound coming from the air passing through the filter.

How hard is it to put it back on? I have a pain in the butt time trying to get those tabs back as it it. And also do you have the product description for that back of stip that you used???

I used some of the K&N oil for the filter and rubbed it on the weatherstrip, makes it really slippery so the lid will slide right over it into the tabs without 'rolling' the weather stripping off.

I bought the stuff at O'reillys, you can see the packaging in the first 'after' picture, it was the only sticky kind they had.

I used single side sticky foam weather stripping that is 3/8 thick. haven't had any problems since. The stuff that comes with the air lid is a cruel joke from SLP.

I have heard numerous stories about sealing with the SLP lid.
I know it's a popular swap but, what I did is modify the filter frame for more filter exposure, then I took out all the fins on the stock lid.
It works great and I have no leaking issues.
A de screened MAF coupled with a new tune and she performs much better than ever.
Cost was about 30 minutes of my time.

It was very simple and the plastic material breaks away real clean.

Okay, it's been a bit, but I just bought some weatherstipping (Metro Sponge Supersoft "Universal Seal Weatherstrip" PN: MW51634), its about .75cm thick. I put it on my lid like you did yours, it doesnt go all the way down like it used to, but the snaps snap down tight on the lid. Should I be worried about that, or because the seal is on it, should it be fine??

If you are really worried about the clips popping off, take a zip tie and go behind and around the front side of the clip and tighten down, clip off excess. The clip will not come off. If you need to look at the filter just cut the zip tie.

mine are really tight too, never come unclipped once though, either use zipties or maybe you could 'un-bend' the end of the clips with pliers a little bit so there's less stress

I'm not really worried about the clips popping off, more that the lids not down all the way and not totally sealing and such. Theres about a less than .5cm gap between the lid and the lower box. I hope that the seal is working, but it seems like too large of a gap for me. Tommorow, I'll try to post pictures of it to show you guys what I mean.

If you notice tghe corner peice, its obviously not down all the way like its supposed to be, and somewhat bowed upwards.

In addition to the pictures I uploaded yesterday, Im uploading the pix of the lid after I just took it off thisafternoon. As you can see I sealed all the way to the wallon thelid. I remember there being an indent on the sides of the lid, should that area have been free from the weatherstipping????

hmm, I'm having a hard time seeing what's causing it to not seal like that... if you can pull the entire peice off, lid and base, and clamp the lid down without the filter unit you can look underneith and deduce the problem... if it sits down fine without the filter you may have found your answer...

I see your problem....You need to have the lid on the inside of the lip of the bottom tray. Other wise it does that.


Look at post 14 for the correct way to install the lid.

In addition, when you place your weather stripping material, for gosh sakes, cut your corners at 45s to make a better sealing and better looking seal.
