Preformance Starters

Time to replace the starter on my car soon.
Someone was telling me there are better then stock ones, that are a lot lighter, and somthing about the RPMs for better starts and to handle more power or somthing?
Anybody knw what I am talking about and where I can get them or brand names ect. ect.?

I replaced mine with another ac delco .The first one lasted around 9 years.
Summit racing has high torque starters.

yeah check summit. . . i remember something about some of the 3/4 ton trucks had em stock and were a lot cheaper than most aftermarket, but i can't remember what years and im not real sure an ls1 starter is the same as other "standard" gm v8 starters. . . i know the one on my 402 bb is the same as most of them, and its a high torque. . . kinda vague answer

i do know the ones i like are half the size of a standard gm v8 starter and sound awesome when used

Both the LT1 and the LS1 already have very small gear reduction starters (high torque) that weigh about 5-7 lbs.

No need to spend money on aftermarket starters made in china.

The LT1 starters are a common upgrade for the older muscle cars that still run the large heavy stock starters.

Keeping in mind both the LT1 and LS1 starters are for the small 153 tooth flywheels only. So the LT1 starters on the old stuff must also run the small flywheels.

If you want the same small (lighter) gear reduction starter on a 168 tooth flywheel on an older car then go with a mid 90's big block truck starter, (they had 168 tooth flywheels),,,it's identical in looks, design and function as the LT1 starters but for the larger diameter flywheels. I have run this starter on my 454 for 10 years without a hickup. Hope that helps.

Yes sir, these stock starters are already gear reduction starters,,,hence "high torque" and they're already small,,,they really don't get much smaller if at all. Not to mention most of the aftermarket high torque starters out there are not designed with the nose cone to support the gear,,,I really don't care for that at all.
There are aftermarket starters out there that produce even more torque but they run upwards of $400 for a good one. No need to spend the money,,,these factory starters will get the job done on just about anything one would want to build.
As I mentioned, I have had one of these factory starters on my 454 chevelle for 10 years,,,,,even had the motor done again since,,,still the same starter. I also run this starter on my 454 truck,,,,,they work like a charm. Hope that helps.

Maybe this will help some more. These starters are now carried in just about any local parts store,,,and they have always had them in stock when I needed one.
They are generally remanufactured in the parts chain stores but as I said,,,never had any problems with mine, and most have lifetime warranties anyway. They generally run in the $70-$80 range plus core charge.
Since I had been installing them on older cars that didn't use them to begin with,,,a friend at the parts store waved the core charges for me,,,,since I obviously didn't have an old one to turn in,,,,lol.

You can also still pick these starters up brand new from your local GM dealer if you must have a new one. I can't remember the prices I was quoted unfortunately,,,my memory is fading.

Parts stores around here sell them at 135 plus core charges. (cheapest one I found)
E-bay I found one with no core charge for 60 bucks shipped.
I will be selling them when I open up my business for around 50 bucks shipped as well.

Ouch,,,,they must have went up in price considerably since I last purchased one.

Yea I checked with Napa, Autozone, and Advance auto parts.
Cheapest was autozone, but then its a lot cheaper on ebay.
And when I will have more store running it would be like 10 bucks cheaper then ebay lol
