I'm pretty sure the 3.23 AT cars have an aluminum one, and I believe all stick shift cars also. Anything you can do to lose rotating mass in the drivetrain is a good thing.

Watch the classified section of this site and others, some folks sell them pretty cheap used, just put some new Ujoints in it when you get it and you should be golden.

I traded my aluminum one out for a steel one.

Mainly because the aluminum one strong enough was $400 and the steel one was $200.

Correct. One way too tell a 2.73 geared A4 equipped Z28 is by looking at the DS. It's steel vs the 3.23 geared A4 car's use of aluminum.

I got rid of my stock aluminum for a Strange 3" chromolly with 1350 yokes and u-joints ($295 shipped to my door). Much stronger than the POS stock aluminum one. I have seen several stock aluminum ones twist in half. Aftermarket Aluminum shafts are nice but awefull pricey, and not as strong as the steel ones.

What about carbon fiber driveshafts? Anybody use those? How much, these are even lighter than aluminum. $550? And as strong as chrome alloy (sp?)

Not recomened for street use. Any kind of road hazard and they will get trashed rather easily. + they are $700 on up. Yes they are lighter than aluminum, but suseptible to damage.

Going back to the original post, the guys got a LT1 so a stock LS1 aluminum i think would make a nice upgrade. I see them on ebay for about $125 bucks

I'd keep the stock steel one. Aluminum is for beer cans. I noticed no difference powerwise going from the stocker (after it broke) to my A-1 steel driveshaft.

Aluminum also is better for vibration, less balance issues. Aluminums are very strong if its the right grade aluminum and you have good U-Joints, I'd imagine the stock is gonna be labeled junk by the guys throwing 400+plus horses at them.
