6 1/2" Polk Component System
Okay so i got a gift card for my birthday and went and bought a pair of 6 1/2" Components (DB6501, $200 at circuit city). They were highly recommended by everbody.
I completely forgot that camaros have sail panel speakers. So should I just get a regular coaxial set for the rear speakers? How will that sound? im just goin with coaxial 4" ones for the rear as well
I plan on running 2 type-r alpine 12"s. 600w alpine amp (for the subs, at 4ohms each) and 1000w 4channel audio acoustik for the highs.Last edited by totalkos; 06-27-2008 at 12:12 AM.

I have two alpine type-r coaxial spekers in the sail panel... gives a lot of highs and moves the sound stage backward, imo. I just disconnected the tweeters and moved them from the speakers to the stock tweet locations in the door and it sounds better that way. My single power acoustics twelve delivers heart stopping bass, too.

Not sure yet unfortunately. I was told to not use the speakers in the rear deck that they were unnecessary . just to do the ones in the sail panels and the ones in the doors. is that correct?
So i guess the components will go in the doors and the coaxial in the sails.
I just dont wanna get it all together and it not sound proper! I dont know enough about car audio. ha

I do not have speakers in my rear deck. A 4" speaker back there with a good set of components up front like you are putting in would be unnecessary. I have Alpine SPR-17 6.5 in my doors and sail panels. The 99 Camaro did not come with a seperate tweeter up front and I didn't want to cut any holes anywhere so I went with the full range. 2 Alpine Type R 12's is going to be huge. I am running 1 Alpine Type R 10 in the stealth enclosure and it hits really good. I am using a 300 watt Kicker mono amp only for the 10 and using the Pioneer (can't remember the model exactly, something with 77 in it) that fits the GM opening and using it's built in amp for my fronts and sails. With that head unit I can crossover at 125hz so that they aren't trying to reproduce any bass. They are clear and I am very happy. Not that a set of components wouldn't sound better.

Yes I would just do coaxials in the rear. In my tahoe and subaru I have polk front and rear. I am really satisfied. The truck has the components in the front. I like the sound better than the infinity/alpine coaxials in my camaro. If you are going with subs you will probably never hear the 4" rear so it is not worth wasting money.

I have had two different sets of 6 1/2 components in my 2002 SS. The first set was Boston Acoustics Pro's , The second set was Polk MOMO's. For bass I have 2 Kicker Solobaric 12's L7's not the weaker L5's. I am big on sound quality, I despise distortion, or the way "canadians" ride around blasting nothing but tweeters, or highs and no bass.. or the opposite where you hear no words and the trunk sounds like it has 10 midgets inside trying to beat their way out with hammers.
I am a Huge fan of ALPINE equipment, not so much the speakers.. but equipment yes! My head unit is an IVA-D900 flip out monitor and dvd player that does just about everything, I have an ALPINE ERA-G320 14 band digital EQ with surround sound and digital sound processing, has a location positioning sensor, so you can literally change the timing of how the speakers hit and where to maximize the sound for who is sitting where in what seat in the car.
If you want true separation and sound quality IMO a nice EQ is a must!!! Eliminates the bass from your highs, it controls your bass solely through the subwoofer on the deck. Gives you a lot of control over all of the different music you might listen too. This one has 6 presets, you listen to country? hit a button and it sets your bands to your preset... rap? hit another button and again to exactly how you want to hear your rap.. Keeps you from blowing the hell out of your highs too by taking out all of the bass notes by control of all of the lower frequencies especially in this one with 14 bands of control.
What next? I have a 6 disc ALPINE dvd changer DHA-S680, actually was one of the first ones to have this in my area got it on the west coast before it was available here. Awesome changer! dolby digital surround sound.. you watch a movie in the deck or the changer with the eq too and its fucking unreal!! Bullets firing around they sound like their zinging through the car haha
For amps ..for the 2 Kickers I have a MTX 81000D 15000 watts, pounds the 2 twelves, seriously a badass amp, highest ratings and awards the year it came out and the following year too.
And for the highs amp the biggest 4 channel they made at the time ALPINE MRV-F540. ALPINE IMO truly makes a great sounding amp for highs..Crystal clear!
To sum it up If you replace the front door speakers with a nice 6 1/2 and put the tweeters up in front of you maybe at the corner of the A-pillar or up near the roof and where the visor meets. They will scream at you! Replace the ones in the back seats with the same.. but if you do it right with the rest of equipment you won't even hear the very back speakers so I definitely wouldn't waist the money on replacing them. You'll never hear them

I put a set of Polk components in the doors of my 'Bird, and a set of Polk Coaxials in the sail panels. I only used my panasonic HU amp to power them though. I'll warn you now, the coaxials didn't fit perfectly, but if you have half a brain you'll get them in there.
They are really nice pieces for the price IMO. They're the nicest pair of speakers I've had yet, currently both pairs play from the doors of my Ram. I hope to buy an RF Power1000 amp to power everything once I get a subthump dual 10" box for the back seat of the truck.

I'm thinking of putting a pair of the db6501 woofers in place of the stock mid-panel subs. The stock speakers are 2Ω but the Polk's are 4Ω. Has anybody done this using the stock Monsoon system? Do they sound good?

Without going 2 ohm you'll get subpar performance from the speakers and be very upset.

That's what I was afraid of. Guess this amp has poor 4 ohm power output. I'm going to test it to see what it actually can put out for 2 / 4 ohm RMS.
