As soon as you fill out the forms, you do the math yourself and you write in your refund. Use the 1040EZ form. Piece of cake. State form is easier yet for me anyways. I put the numbers in an online form, and it does the math automatically. Then just print it out.
Little tip. Get two forms, do the one in pencil, and double check it twice. Make sure all math is correct, then go back and do the other one in pen.

HR Block is how i've done mine for the past two years, but they charge for you to do your state. Chances are, your states website has a free filing site somewhere. PA does, as long as you have your W2's you should be in good shape.

Why pay someone to do your taxes?!?? It is fucking addition and subtraction. Are you a moron or what? I could have my 10 year old cousin figure it out. Not rocket science. All numbers are right on the w2.

i pay someone to do my taxes, sure i could do it but with a house, trading stocks, savings accounts with intrest its a real pain in the ass. a monkey can do a 1040ez like stated above. Its not untill you have write offs, a house, property tax, maybe a second job, trad stocks that it becomes a task that takes hrs.

have you ever tried using turbo tax? It makes that stuff a lot easier. The only problem is you might miss something that could cost you money. I would say try it one year and see what you come up with then compare it to the guy you pay to do it and see if he finds something you didn't. I bet you'd get it with turbo tax though. It's pretty detailed but easy to follow.

taxes are pretty easy... just sat through a class to get certified as a volunteer tax preparer for the base.
Most people have a simple 1040 with the standard deduction and maybe childcare credits takes about 30 min to complete. even with having a house and doing the deductions it stays fairly simple.
I volunteered for the free training because i wanted to make sure i was getting mine completed correctly as they have gotten progressivly more complicated over the years. After a few days in class looks like i was doing it right... even with rental income, multiple homes and a home based business i still manage to complete them myself.
no way i should pay someone else to do what only takes about an hour of my time.
