Torque Converter

Replacing the trans in my Z28 and sent my torque converter to a local trans shop that advertises in all the major car magazines. Thought that the TCI 3000 stall converter was loosing its stall but after this shop cut it open they found nothing wrong with it. The owner of the shop said that it was probably a bad motor. The question is, how can a bad motor lower the stall on a torque converter?

Well stall is relative to horse power and torque if the engine torque lowers then the stall will be lower, Same reversed take for example a 3000 stall built around a 350 hp engine. then add some power and make it a 450 hp engine you might end up with a real stall of 3500.

so if you get one, lets say a 3000, with headers, dual exhaust, and lid would the stall be increased by much?

No its takes large HP/torque increases to make noticable stall increases. I mean yes any power adder will increase the stall but its kinda linear. Faor instance you add 25 hp you not going to physically notice the difference Add 150 or 200 and then its becoming substaintial

I'm not sure if there's a standard but I did see a company list their stall ratings at 400hp which meant if you were buying a 3500 stall you'd see that at 400hp. I also don't put a ton of faith in the accuracy of stall ratings. I think it's more of a ballpark figure. JMO

It is the amount of torque that raises/lowers the stall, and yes, a 25 pound foot of torque increase at the rated stall will be noticeable, that's if you can check the stall at the rated rpm now. Brakes (lack of holding) and gear multiplication makes this hard to do.
