Thinking about getting a lid for the WS6
It seems that, in principle, swapping out the stock lid is about the same as flipping the breather on an old 4-barrel. Is that true?

Well, they both let the engine breathe better, so I guess the basic principle is the same. Although from what I've heard from the graybeards (haha) was that the lid was flipped, usually on a parent's car, more for the sound than anything else.
When I was in high school, ('96) a friend used to take his mom's '79 Chrysler Newport w/a 360 out all the time, and the first thing we did was flip the lid. It didn't seem to make it any faster, but it sure sounded a bit meaner. Haha, one time we forgot to flip the lid back, and she noticed right away and yelled at him. That car was a tank, we had alot of fun with it.

The idea of swapping the lid is to eliminate as much restriction as possible. The stock lid haas a huge aur silencer that cause air to not follor a direct path into the intake. The lid itself is molded with baffles to cause turbulence. A free mod is to cut the baffles and smooth the inside of the stock lid itself. But get a lid, you will lose that big restricting silencer

Yup change the lid. Keep the old one to return to stock if ya wanna. The intake roar is a deeper sound, I like it better. It is not like flipping the lid on carbed cars, all that did was make them louder and let the engine suck in all that hot underhood air, making less power! New lid equals .1 at the drag strip and 1 or 1.5 MPH, I proved it to myself at the drag strip.

About 10 RWHP, or so. It should be good for at least a tenth in the 1/4.

http://www.motorsporttech.com/press/...ay2004_02.html Here are several lids tested. Get a lid and have your TB ported, polished, and the bump stop ground. You won't regret it.

i got a dumb question...
whats better, a CAI system or a lid? or am i an idiot and u can have both...
im not an expert, im just a beginner, but it seems like one or the other.
i know k&n advertises a 19hp gain for lt1's with their cai kit, idk about ls1's. sounds real good to me even if its optimistic

You can have both. A lid smoothes the airflow transition from the airbox to the throttle body by easing the contour and removing the stock baffles inside the factory lid. The better flow results in more power.
A CAI setup, or at least a good CAI setup, pulls in cooler air from outside the engine compartment. Cooler air make more power than warmer air.
With a SS/WS6 hood you can seal the hood to the airbox and have a CAI setup, then add a lid to maximize power. Without the hood, there are aftermarket CAI setups that can be utilized in conjunction with a lid (FTRA, SSRA).

Here's what I did with materials from Lowes: http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...42420/JGRA.jpg . Cost me $25 for Lexan, self tapping screws, and some weather stripping. Took about an hour to make and install. You can see I left the rear baffle to deflect rain in the picture, it's the black thing. Some people take their time and make really nice looking setups. Here's one that gave me the idea: http://guerragroup.com/2000TA.htm

awesome info! i thought a cai got rid of the need for an air lid cuz i thought air entered thru the lid (ive never looked at an ls1 or anything of the sort so i never was able to look close enough to see what did what)
