Navy Blue Metallic- '00 Formy A4
Another mpg thread....A4 owners please read!
Yup, another mpg thread.
I just spent close to an hour going through the search, I did find other threads, but they weren't very specific. I'm finding results from 9mpg to 35mpg.
I'm specifically interested A4's here.
What I'd like to know is;
What mpg are you getting, of course,
but more specifically,
What driving conditions? (stop and go city, highway, rural roads, etc)
A4, or M6?
Rear gear (if known)
model (T/A, Z28, WS6, SS)
driving style (drive to have fun, or drive for economy?)
average cruising speed
Thanks alot!
Reason I ask:
I'm looking for a '00 A4 Camaro SS. I drive conservatively, I learned to do that once I started my 60 mile commute with my 16mpg Jeep. I average about 60-65mph, and my drive consists of about 10 miles of two lane rural roads with about 5 lights, and then about 20miles of highway. I'm just wondering what kind of mileage I can expect to attain, as being able to guestimate that will be able to help me better budget for the car.
I WILL go to the track, and I WILL get on it, but that will be on the weekends. During the week I'll be trying to get the best mileage possible.

Black- 2000 TA
I have a 2000 TA A4 with 3.23. I drive my car mostly in stop and go traffic, with a 15 mile stretch of highway to get there, and drive it for fun. I average 19 - 21mpg. The lowest I've gotten is 18.5mpg. I don't see how some people get 10mpg with a mostly stock car.

I have 2 F bodies, one 6 speed and one auto you can use for comparison.
My 6 speed easily gets 21 mpg driving around town with alot of stop and go. Just got back from a 600 mile round trip,,,Cinci to Flint, Michgan,,,cruising at 80-85 mph most of the way with the A/C on and got right on 26 mpg both ways. This car is a bone stocker and still has the factory 3.42 gears that all 6 speeds come with. At 80 mph it only turns 2,000 rpms,,,at 85 mph it is turning 2,100 rpms. May even pick up another 1-2 mpg if I slowed down a little,,,70 mph is only 1,800 rpms,,,,but I was also trying to make some time.
My automatic has factory issue 3.23 gears, which were an option,,,(standard was 2.73),,,so those cars may vary a little in mpg.
Anyway, this car is also a stocker,,,and consistently gets 20 mpg driving around the same town I drive the 6 speed car. I have not yet had this car on a long highway cruise so I cannot comment on the MPG but I will say I don't believe it will be as good as my 6 speed car, simply because the cruising rpm is about 400 rpms higher at the same MPH as my 6 speed car due to not having as much overdrive ratio in the trans. So I would assume it may pickup 2-3 mpg from what it gets in the city but I don't think it will get 26 or better.
2,000 rpms in the automatic (.70 overdrive) car and 3.23 gears is only 65 mph compared to 2,000 rpms and 80 mph in the 6 speed (.50 overdrive) so in order to match the mph I have to spin the auto car a little tighter,,,Hope that helps.

I get a little over 300 miles per tank. The most I've gotten is 340, I was running on fumes then.

These have a 16.8 gallon tank, right?
Not bad. I get about 330 if I really stretch it in my Jeep, and that sucker has a 23 gallon tank.
That's how I rationalize it...these things are economy cars compared to that. My other DD that just died was a '98 Olds 88, that thing was a freak, it got 28mpg regularly. Of course it was big and slow and no fun to drive, so I'll give up a few mpg for a car I actually enjoy driving/looking at/being seen in.
I've decided not to be too fussy about transmissions, there are positives and nagatives to both for me. I'm just going to get whichever car is the best deal, whether it's a M6 or A4.
I just found another car I want to look at, this one's an M6. So we'll see, it's basically a coin toss at this point.

When I had nothing but a few bolt ons and stock rearend (2.73) in my Z I averaged high 20's driving my car back and forth to work (115+ miles daily). Thats with average cruise speed of about 75 on the highway (90% of the drive) with a few redlight stops when I got close to work. I'm the type that is "always" in front leaving the light and I'm quick to ablige any who ask me to hit it , so the stoplight action for me usually dropped what would have other wise been 30 mpg and usually cost me 10$ a day.
Now with current mods it takes about 15$ (gas at 3.00 AVG) to get to work and back unless I play with it (which happens quite a bit now) when I mash it now I can actually watch a 1/4 tank evaporate within a short distance. My Toy 00 Z28 1SC A4 - MS3 cam with supporting valvetrain, Milled LS6 heads, LS7 lifters, , ARP rod and mains, All free mods, pacesetters, True duals, moser 9 with 4.11's and Detroit Locker, Vig 3600 tuned, tubular SFC,adj PHR, LCA, adj TA, PHR reloc, LCA reloc. all with poly bushings, ZR1's and Nitto DR's (315).
My other toy 05 GTO LS2 M6- Comp XR269HR cam, 918's, hardened pushrods, Dart Pro 1's, pacesetters, X-pipe, flowmaster 1 chambers, TSP oil pump, Tick master cylinder. Pedders RR bushings, end links, SB bushings, tie rods and strut mounts, total performance poly F&R bushings. Polk DVC 12", Infinity Kappa 6.5 component and 6x9's with corresponding amps.
Her toy 77 F100-6.6/c6. All original (for now)

Sebring Silver- 2000 CamaroSS
The capacity of the fuel tank is 16.8 gallons
To prevent running dry & frying the fuel pump, the fuel light comes on early to leave you with a couple of gallons.
This is why you usually will pump only 14 into the tank

I get 15 mpg, and I drive my car pretty hard. I love accelerating, so I'm quite the leadfoot. the 15 mpg was a mix of freeway and city driving, but mostly in the city. I'm sure I could increase the mpg if I drove a little easier, but I'm young and having fun.
