I had no problem at all with that ad. Reminded me that it's time to clean, oil and double check my guns actually. Fucktards.

I hunt & for that reason I'm pro gun. Honestly though I don't get either side of the magazine argument. Smaller magazine isn't going to make any difference in the mass shooting crimes because those guys almost always have a duffle bag full of shit. Multiple guns & magazines. On the other side when would 5 more bullets make the life or death difference? I'd like to see the stats from self defense shots fired. I bet the average is less than 10 & closer to 5. During deer season we get 3 to sometimes hit a running target. Take your 10 shot clip to the range & practice. 3 good shots is better than 15 shitty shots.

Looking at it from a combat perspective. In the instance when face with multiple attackers, more bullets and less magazine changes is better. Also in the situation of 9mm, 380's, 38's, and even 25 caliber pistols multiple shots to stop an attacker would also be reasonable since these rounds lack the knockdown power of 10mm, 40 & 45 calibers.
Range Practice - I totally agree with you on going to the range and practice. However, the average range will not let you practice tactical or "panic" meaning quick draw, rapid, multi-targets firing, the kind of response you would have if attacked. When I practice, I do both hands, both eyes & opposite eye/hand. I taught my self to do that because you may need to. Never know when or if you get in a situation were you are blind in one eye and your normal hand is broke.
I know it might seem extreme but the more you practice the less you bleed when it matters.
I had to dropped a guy with a AK74 that was less then 12ft, in full run, weighting about 105lbs and it took 4 shots to drop him with a 9mm. His intent was to give us a warm greeting to Iraq. Lucky for me and my guys my reflexes took over, it was over less then 2 seconds.

absolutely it would make a difference, ...there are many critical factors to self-defense (that probably aren't of concern when hunting):
1) anytime you have to manipulate the firearm ( charging operation - rack slide, mag change (which may also require charging operation), you introduce a chance of a malfunction...
2) as scott mentions, ...there is now way to know ahead of time, how many rounds it will take to incapacitate your attacker(s) in your gunfight
3) time is of the essence, ...acting swiftly is critical, ...having to fiddle w/ a reload (takes critical seconds even if you're cognizant, practiced, and good) while under stress of combat, the attack still coming at you, etc. is not a situation you'd would "choose" to be in...
4) your deer aren't shooting at you...
from a self-defense perspective, ..given the fact you really don't get to choose the time, place, and scope of the attack, ...the more "capacity" the better... and you should have one or more spares
...there are diminishing returns though, in terms of reliability vs. capacity. various factors in terms of the manufacturer and mag "type"/construction, but it seems that as you get over 30 rnd capacity, reliability concerns begin to mount...

I enjoy shooting in the mountains for this reason. I can setup any number of "real world" types of drills, that are far more valuable in real life than standing in a perfect weaver stance putting pretty holes in your paper target. Shooting from cover, shooting off handed, shooting after I run wind sprints to get my heart rate up really high, panic draws, shooting while moving in all directions, from your back, etc etc.

if you do all of that yourself, you need to do IDPA...
IDPA - Welcome!
I've been doing IDPA for a while now and I love it...you dont have to do the crazy competition stuff that you see on TV etc, but local gun clubs in your state have ambassadors that put on the trainings so you can start the process. Once you go through one of the trainings and they sign off on you, you are free to go to anywhere you can find a tournament. I started doing Pistol only, but now I do the 3 gun setup...usually a pistol "1911 for me", AR15, and a 12gauge shotgun. You dont have to carry all the guns at once...most times you just have to carry 2 guns and you pick up a 3rd somewhere else on the course. Its a blast...like you said, anybody can go shoot at a range and hit a target...this is situational shooting while moving, crouching, running, shooting from cover, shooting with opposite hand, limited ammo, etc etc etc...Last edited by theorangeguy; 01-16-2014 at 09:29 AM.

Some of the best training I ever had was instructors setting up faults or specific conditions in your weapon while you were turned around, then you had to turn around and go through a shooting drill of some sort. Good stuff to keep you on your toes and teach you where you're "anticipating".

I did that at training events.
Kink a link for machine guns, throw in weak spring on a magazine so it would cause double feed.
For Arms Inspections I stealthy remove a small piece and have them reassemble their weapons to see if they would catch or recognize the missing piece.
Some might have thought I was a dick but I'm confident that when the shit hit the fan they were better prepared.

We're not talking military type issues here though....we're talking simple self defense. How many shots would it take you to handle someone during a home invasion? I don't practice shit and I'm guessing less than 3 after they get past the dog.

How can anyone know the answer to that question? What about when massive riots start or flash mobs? How many shots will you need then? How many people wil lbe entering your home? How many will be armed?
These are not questions you can answer ahead of time. Therefore you just need to be prepared best as you can. It is the bill of rights NOT the bill of needs.
