connection problem....
I put our old pc up in my son's room for him to use. It was connected downstairs to the router via Ethernet cable. It doesn't have onboard wifi so I took the usb network adapter I have and tried to use that. I can't get it to detect the network. What do I need to do to get it to detect the network? In the past the laptops I've had would autodetect but this one ain't doing shit.

Have you went into the control panel and tried to use either the connect to a network, or setup a new connection or network options?

Yep.....it doesn't show the network there. The network that show's up under the "manage networks" is the ethernet connection which is obviously telling me my ethernet cable is not connected. I also can't figure out how to remove that connection. Righ clicking it doesnt let me have the delete option

Sounds like moving the kid's room to the basement might be easier

maybe I'll run an Ethernet cable out the window and up the side of the house to their room and then run it in their window......then I'll use bright yellow epoxy to stick it to the side of the house.
I'll get it figured out eventually. I'm going to test that adapter with the laptop today and make sure the adapter is working but I just used it on the laptop Saturday and it was working fine then so I don't think that's the problem. I just don't know if there's something in the network settings that I should be doing to get it to detect the network.

Which OS?

think I figured out the problem.....my adapter drivers aren't compatible with windows 7. I tried finding compatible drivers but no luck. I'm just going to buy a new adapter. I didn't really want to steal this one from the laptop anyhow...I use the laptop from time to time in the garage.

Check to see if your anti virus might be the problem. I haven't seen many old driver issues with Win7. At least not like I did with Vista 64 bit. That was a nightmare.

I looked at netgear's site and win7 was listed as compatible with this adapter. I found the drivers for it online but it still says it can't find the drivers for it. My wife is at the store right now and I had her pick me up a new adapter....I'll try that when she gets home.

If that doesn't work, then I would check the antivirus. That Desktop isn't used to having a wireless adapter so it could be blocked by your software.

got the new adapter and it works now......that other adapter was given to me years and years ago. Not sure even how old it is....at least 6-7 years because that's how long I've had it.

kinda.....set it all up and now all my other wifi shit has to have a password and I can't figure out how to turn the security bullshit off.
I live in the boon docks.....not a lot of wifi thiefs out here. I don't want people to have to put in some goofy ass password when they come over with their phones and laptops. I'm going deer hunting for the weekend in about an hour...I'll have to figure it out Sunday when I get back.

Get something like an ASUS RT-N10+.
ASUS - Networks- ASUS RT-N10 B1 (RT-N10+ B1)
Use it as a router, and set up a WiFi account for use by any guests, or for you to connect to without a password (or some simple password - like "a").
To use it in router-mode, you need an Ethernet cable to a router switch. Connect it up to the "WAN" port on the ASUS RT-N10+.
Newegg has them on special this weekend for $23 (Promo code EMCJHJC74). Otherwise, they go for ~$28.

Or, get some cheap router that has wireless. IMHO, I like the ASUS and DLink routers/etc. Many other brands seem to have connection problems and/or last less than a year.Last edited by NE-Firebird; 12-14-2012 at 08:35 PM.
