Losing interest in my cars...sell them?
For the last three months, I've lost just about all interest in my camaro and chevelle. I don't want to work, drive, or even roll either one out of the garage. I worked hard to buy and wrench on both ,but lately there is no drive in me to do anything with them.
I wrench everyday for a living, been doing it full time since i was 19. I guess it's just now as I've gotten older I don't want it as a hobby when it is my job.
I don't know if I should sell them, or hang on to them and hope I regain motivation again.
Anybody else been through this before?

You aren't alone. In the past 10 months I've probably only driven mine 6x. Hell I barely even post anymore.
I'm not selling something I have owned since day one and put a lot of time and effort into it. I own it. Insurance is 300 a year and registration is only like 55 dollars. For 350 a year plus odds and ends maintenance, it's completely worth holding onto imo. I can save that much money in one paycheck.
Honestly I probably spend more like 1-1500 a year on average, putting in new parts or fixing random things.

You have the reason as to why I didn't become a mechanic. I love wrenching on cars, but I'd rather do it as a hobby than do it for a living.

I worked at a bodyshop for a long time. I was so busy building everyone elses cars I had no motivation to build mine. So I was burnt out and I got out of cars all together, but still held on to it (74 camaro). Then I started getting the bug again, started fixing it a little. Actually bought my 01 WS6 and got addicted to Ls engines. Then revamped my build, until I bought my 98 TA (adding it to the stable) to run around town and take to the track. So I sold my old 74 camaro and now have 2 bad ass birds, and can't see selling them anythime soon (even with a baby on the way). I'll park them and put the cover on them first because the car bug comes back, and once you sell a car. It's hard to get it back.

I know how ya feel but for me it was my job I lost interest in for a short while. I used to fly for a living, not a pilot but a flight engineer/chinook mechanic. I didn't mind wrenching on the acft since I hardly get much of a chance to do so, but it was the flying that got to me, and I'm an instructor for enlisted crewmembers. I stopped flying for almost a year and hardly missed it at all, but eventually got back in the air and fell in love with it again. It's more than likely just a phase, try mixing it up a lil, do you drag race? try road racing, or vise versa. Chances are you will sell your cars and regret it later on. It's probably a drag wrenching on cars all day and going home to two bad ass cars that you don't have the energy for. Sort of how a gynacologist might feel.

Sometimes I don't wanna look at it lol pero I drive my jeep for few days. Get tired of it and go back to the camaro .
As you get older you lose interest..

I'll probably regret selling them for a little while, but it would be nice to use the money from selling my cars to be completely debt free, except for the mortgage, and have some change left over.

Everyone goes through it,if you have other goals that are important and cannot be achieved while owning the cars then you should sell.
You need to do the things that make you happy in life.2010 Camaro SIM 2SS/RS A6

Debt free would be great, but damn near impossible.

It seems like a lot of people have this issue and me being one of them.
I lose interest after a few years and I think its for a few reasons. 1. Its not the car I really want and 2. I cant do all that I want to do to it.
Next year I am going to be at a cross road. I plan to trade in my 2005 Jeep for a sports car of some time. Either a LS3 6-speed Corvette or perhaps even a late 1st or early 2nd gen Viper as they are not that much more expensive. At that time I will be purchasing my parents 50k mile 2005 Durango to use as a summer vehicle. Now here is where I am a litte caught. I have my 2000 Z28 that would be a car just to put miles on (it has 73k right now) or it would become an all out track whore. The thing is a 30k loan isnt horrible but I am not sure if I want to have a "toy car" payment AND try to work on that Z28. The other thing is my father and I have the 69 Camaro we have a lot of crap for but havent started on. I will be debt free as far as a house payment and college loans as well.
Perhaps you need a new project to work on? Or, set your next part of the LS1 project to something big........that way you have little thing to work on in that regard till you finish that project.

Phantom Black Metallic- 2004 GTO M6
I was burned out back in 05. Went into HVAC for a few months. Got laid off twice. Came back to wrenching. It has its ups and downs, but I know that this is what I am good at. Tried leaving auto last year. Nope. Didn't work.

Ive gone threw periods threwout the last 20 years that i lose interest then get the bug back.
Its actually very common for people when they get older to lose any interest in muscle/sports cars and sell them for more comfy cars.
I for one will not sell the Formula. I do enjoy driving it when i actually get it out of the garage. I bought it brand new and am under 23000 miles. I might still put on another 600-700 before the end of fall time.

even if you sell your car you still have debt, i sold my z got $7000 the car was gone and money was gone, paid the bills, few months later still had the same bills, so to me is not worth it.
i wouldnt sell mine cuz the gas mileage i get is great, way better than any other car i had or have, no major problems yet.. so in my case no need to sell it even if im tired of it

Kinda... I like the car itself, but I realized I hate working on it. I don't know what happened, I used to enjoy working on cars, but for some reason I just can't get motivated to turn a wrench lately. I can't justify paying someone to do it though, so I've gotta get motivated soon. Same thing with car club stuff, I haven't been to any events yet this year, nor have I hit the track yet. (although gas prices have alot to do with that)
I've been putting off doing my brakes because of lack of motivation, although I HAVE to do it this weekend because they're starting to grind. I bought a set of sways a few months ago, those are still sitting i nthe box, along with the front Bilsteins I bought last summer. I also haven't been able to work up the energy to wash it the last few weeks.
Same thing with my Jeep...I have some work I need to do on that, but I can't bring myself to do it.
At this point I just want to lease a new Elantra or something like that and never have to turn any wrenches on it. Three years then they can have it back, and I start over with another new car. I'm starting to think that keeping cars 10+ years old is a bad move. (collector cars being the exception of course)

I don't drive my car much, but for different reasons. I use to have a black 89 GTA, 50,000 miles in great condition and some guy in a old s10 blew through a stop light and hit me at about 60 miles an hour, so my car stays in the garage most of the time. I would like to work on it more, but i just moved and money is tight. But, I'll hold onto it as long as I can, there really isn't anything new that has sparked my interest enough to buy it... I like the new engines and the HP wars (don't know how much longer their going to last with the new government intrusions with CAFE regulations) I don't know, its an expensive hobby too.

I've grown to practically resent my car. It hasn't become what I intended it to for various reasons for starters. 2nd I've had plenty of headaches with it because theres lots of aftermarket stuff on it and I don't care what anyone says, as good as the quality of some aftermarket parts is, the driveability is never even remotely close to OEM/stock. Last, I cant drive it in any kind of bad weather. So you add all that up and it being a 90 and it stops justifying its place in the driveway
