engine options
so i have a bad bearing in the bottom end, and the ol lady aint happy. i want to make this cost as little as possible of course, and i have been looking at some options..
pull the engine, replace the bearings and massage or replace the crank if needed...
buy 5.3 liter and shove it in there just to get it driveable so she will shut up...only problem with this is i dont know what else i would need to make it work....

Rebuild it or at least get a lq9 motor and swap it in the 5.3 really limits your power options in the future as far as displacement and head options go. The 6.0 would open up a lot of avenues for future power. However a rebuilt ls1 would be the same price if not cheaper assuming you put it together, and you would have a new engine.

I would prolly rebuild it also..
It's not like you'd be throwing money away..
It was a good engine to start with..
A stock spec Ls1 would still be powerfull, fast, reliable, and modable..imho

I would probably just go with a short block assembly and be done with it.

yea see the thing is i havnt seen a short block reasonably priced.....if im gonna pay $1600 for a short block, i would rather throw another thousand and get a crate engine..i have decided to replace the bearings, timing chain, install ls6 oil pump, and maybe, just maybe, a cam and stall, depending on how much sweet talk the boss.

what about the rings? while your in there its just cheap insurance ya know? if you do go with stall and cam dont forget to include the price a good set of springs, pushrods and dyno tune.

i have thought about the rings as well, but i am unsure if i wanna do that yet...nothing for these engines is cheap and that includes head gaskets....i have thought about springs and tune as well....thats why i am only certain on replacing the oil pump, timing chain, and bearings.

i wasnt including everything. hed also need a fuel pump and bigger injectors and tuned and a rear and hardier clutch and stronger drive shaft and built t56 and..................................
and hes probably just trying to get other people involved with the convo. get some other opinions.
turns out for the price of a LS6 i could well be on my way on a 408 build. i figure right now ill just throw another ls1 in there. its a crate for $2700. bolt ons will run it around 330rwhp and ill suffice. then ill start my 408 build when i get a new dd..... cuz 12mpg dd wont be fun filling it up twice a week
some day...
edit* sorry 35th. i wasnt trying to be an asshole.Last edited by BashamWS6; 04-29-2011 at 11:29 AM.
