Job help.
Does anyone here work for Best Buy? I'm considering applying for a job there, but I dont know what the pay rate is. I dont want to work there if it's less than what I'm making now. But it seems like a much better job than my current position.

I think they vary quite a bit depeding on the position your applying for. Had a drinkin buddy that worked there for a while. I wanna think he started at 9 or 9.50.

If you go in as just a hourly employee there to help customers dont expect much. They are like most big box retailers and pay $.50-2 above minimum wage depending on the area you live in. If your going in as management in some form or a specialist in a area then you can probably do decently. My backroom manager at my current job was a manager there and left due to the fact that they are really pushy with extended warrenties, addons and other types of upsales. He said multiple times they care more about that then the actual sale. He would watch store managers basically ignore a customer and lose a sale so that they wouldnt have to worry about their addon % being lowered b/c the customer didnt want any extras. Now it has been a couple yrs since he was there so things could have changed but ya never know.

Knightmare - I really would suggest, at your age, looking at a place like Loews or Menards. You will make a lot more there starting off than any electronics store. Just my .02.

agreed, lowes, home depot or menards..
I know at menards, you can qualify for yearly profit sharing, and work you way up and make tall cash.
A friend of mine worked in the lumber yard, made 42K a year, and every year received a profit sharing check around 4-6k... dept managers double both salary and profit sharing.
just have to be able to handle retail hours
store managers makes 6digits a year, profit sharing around 60k a year, and you get a company car.Last edited by ibanez7; 04-10-2011 at 11:16 AM.

All the jobs listed here are minimum wage jobs to start here..
No lumber yard pays 40+k per year here.. Maybe 18k lol..
Salary = ass.. You get the same pay whether it's 1 hour or 100 hours worked.. And you better believe it's going to be closer to 100..
I was a manager for Long John Silvers when I was a teen had 4-5 years in and still had to work another job to pay the normal bills one would have just maintaining an apartment alone.. Unit managers made 30k.. Now sure that was a few years ago, but they have'nt changed since around here.. I would imagine it depends on the cost of living where you reside.. No Lowes or Best Buy would ever pay an unskilled person more than minimum wage to start here..

Not really sure what your looking for but I see your from Charleston sc, give publix supermarkets a shot. Fairly easy work and lots of good benefits(health, dental, 401k and profit sharing) and lots of opportunity to move up in the company if thats what your looking for. They are dying for good people in that area especially people for management(you must work your way up in the company they will not hire you straight on as a manager). The company is ever expanding in SC so there is lots of opportunity up there. If you have any retail experience you will probably start out at $10+.

I like being paid salary making XXX a year and working 35 hrs every week
Some of us don't want to live at work
Here in Indiana, like said by ibanez (who lives in IL), you can easier start at $10+ an hour at Menards. Department managers make 60K and store managers make 100K+, not including the other benefits. I think it's a good starting job.
You even make more per hour if you are full-time as opposed to part-time...usually like $2/hr more.

I'm still going to school so that's the biggest setback. Well, it's not a setback, but is a limiting factor in where I can work. Trying to get a job where I can get enough hours after class for it be worth it is the key. That's why I'm currently working for Domino's. I work from 5pm - 2am and make about $900 every two weeks including tips. But I also have to put alot of that money into my gas tank.
Because of my hours of availability, I obviously couldn't get any sort oh management position. But I feel like even I wouldn't work as many hours or make as much money, I wouldn't be nearly as exhausted when I get up at 7am for my first class. I also wouldn't be putting the rediculous amount of wear and tear on my car. I just hit 17,000 miles the other day and I've only had the car since the end of August. We don't have Menards around here but two of my best friends have worked for Lowes since they got out of high school and have been pretty happy there. I just don't know how that would work with my class schedule.Last edited by KnightmareWS6; 04-11-2011 at 08:26 AM.

I think in general, most employers are understanding of people's availability when they are going to school to further their education.
Being that you already have (2) friends that have or are working there, I would apply and put them as a reference (assuming they were/are in good standing with the company).
The worst that would happen is they offer you an unfair wage (to you) or wouldn't be accepting of the work hours you're able to work.
My youngest brother worked for Menards while he went to college. He was very happy working there.

Even though they close, there is a midnight crew. You may be able to work out something where you work a few evening hours while the store is open and then do a different job function after store hours for a few. Ask your friends about that.
