Before they could even get their arm out it could kill that baby. Why would you own a pit bull with a newborn. News story waiting to happen.

Dogs are a breed of animal that has been bred as being a house pet for thousands of years.
If loved and trained properly, a dog WILL NOT turn on you and will remain well mannered.
Problem is, most people THINK they know how to train a dog....when they have no clue.
Yes, Pits are VERY protective. With a pit, there is a special way you have to raise them. You have to socialize them, a lot.

Sarcasm detectors appear to be broken up in this thread....
I did a report about Vick and the dogs....only one had to be put down. The rest were rehab'd and adopted out. One even became a service dog.

Iron Lungs are what was used before the respirator was invented. Giant iron cylinder in which entire body was put in, head sticks out end with a rubber seal around neck. It breathed for you by pressurizing and depressurizing the chamber, making you breath basically by forcibly pushing down on chest with air pressure. It was not meant so no harm could come to you. You could still get sick, get hurt, get face eaten off by a pit bull etc... Orion's suggestion of a plastic bubble was more apt.
But to the crux of the matter, soldiers are some of the most disciplined and well trained people in the world, but still you hear every once and a while about one just snapping and losing it. Dogs are just animals, no matter how well you train them, they can just snap for no reason whatsoever. The question is, when that happens around your baby, do you want it to be a nice furry cuddly soft papillon that you can just punt, of a pile of muscles with teeth bred for one purpose, and one purpose only, taking on a set of horns with 1000lbs of bull behind them.

I have owned 5 pits in my short life time and would trust them around a child before I would trust most people. It's not the breed its how you raise them. I see a hell of a lot more people do harm to children then I see dogs...

That's a dramatization and you know it. A pitbull that has a KNOWN abusive past is definitely more of a risk than a pitbull that has been raised and treated right. So I agree, no matter how happy I think the dog is now, I wouldn't trust it that close to a defenseless infant either. That's not at all the same as saying 'I have to put my child in an iron lung to keep everything potentially harmful away from my child'...
With that being said, some of the sweetest dogs I've ever been around were Pitbulls and Rottweilers... And I'm glad to see a story like this, with these dogs getting to live the normal happy dog lives that they should...
