    Buying a new washer

I am in the market for a new washer, and I am thinking of buying one of the new front load types. I've read good things about them. I have had some LG appliances in the past, and generally liked them. Based on these LG front load washer reviews, LG seems to come out pretty well for their washers too. Based on what it says about it in this LG WM2501HWA review this model looks like it might be the one for me.

in germany, we ran out of these top-load-upright-bowl washers in the 1950s 0r 60s, so coming to the states is always like visiting a museum in terms of household appliances. i grew up with front load washers, yes, they are good, the new big door types even better. our washer is at least 12 years old and works perfectly.

Perhaps what he is suggesting is that I should, in fact, forget about the clothes washer and find myself a woman, at the dating website he mentions, and then let HER deal with the laundry?

A Bosch you say. Perhaps the Bosch WFVC3300UC might be the front loader for me then? Though it is a lot closer in price to that LG WM2501HWA than I would expect, considering that the LG has the steam features.

I heard about a front load washer that locks and you can't open it when its operating. This was a while back but somehow a small kid crawled inside it and his mother started the washer. Once she realized her kid was in it, she couldn't open it and the kid ended up dying. Freak accident for sure and sad story.

all front loaders i know are locked during operation, so the woman must have turned on the machine with the kid already inside... anyway, you can open them after you turned them off. that sounds like the toyota owners calling the police saying they can't slow down their car when all they gotta do is turn the ignition off...

i wasn't saying you should get a bosch, it was just so state the reliability of these machines. i'm sure the lg is just as good. i don't even know if bosch still produces in germany.

The high efficiency front loads also use a lot less water. We have had a front load for about 2 years now and love it.

I've heard from relatives they hold moisture more than top loads, causing mold and a stink to develop if not properly vented, meaning leaving the door open for a while.

Once again, only have "heard" that.

Yeah the front loaders do take a little more effort to maintain than the old top loaders, which in my experience take no effort. Probably worth the extra few minutes a week though for the water and energy savings. Here is a good post about preventing front load washer mold. Seems pretty reasonable...

I still use a rock, bar of lye soap, and wash board down by the creek.

We have a normal top load. The only thing about those front loads that worries me are leaks when they age.
