parking brake Q

not sure if this question belongs here or in the LT1 section, since i think LT1 parking brakes are different from LS1, but does anyone know how to adjust the parking brakes on a 95 camaro?

If it happens to be the same as the later year cars, you fully engage and release the parking brake 3 times. It is supposed to be self adjusting. If that is not how it is done, it most likely has a threaded rod either at the parking brake handle mechanism or underneath the car in the tunnel. Someone on here should know for sure.

Pumping the e brake handle should automatically adjust the rear calipers.

thanks. since they didnt self adjust though i assume they are too far out of adjustment or something? i just had the rear rotors and calipers replaced, and when i got it back the ebrake handle had no tension till almost all the way up, and in no position does it give any roll resistance. im going to look today for a threaded rod or something on the cable to adjust it with. i found this website http://shbox.com/1/adjparkingbrake.jpg but cant make heads or tails of the diagram, and am not for sure "free travel" is what i need to adjust.

If it is anything like the '98 - '02 setup, chances are the rubber boot on the parking brake lever (at the backing plate) has disintegrated. After this happens, all sorts of road grime and moisture gets in there and things eventually get rusted up. It's not too bad to rebuild the parking brake -- this is a before and after pic of mine just to give you an idea of what it looks like:





The lever that the parking brake cable attaches to forces the drum pad against the inside of the brake rotor when engaged. There is a self adjuster assembly that is essentially identical to that of a rear drum brake equipped car. Chances are that is what is frozen and is preventing your brakes from adjusting.

on my car....the e-brake doesnt catch until like...the last 2 clicks..

sometimes when i pull up on it, it clicks one time, then offers no resistance and goes all the way up...but holds.

will this pumping help mine? it feels like my cable is stretched or something

It should, unless your adjusters are frozen. It certainly will not hurt anything to try. Hold the button in and do it 3 times -- see what happens.

thanks for the help but i probably should have at least taken the wheel off and looked before asking; the mechanic didnt have it assembled quite right, so the cable wasnt actuating a little rod that forces the pad against the wheel. fixed on accident by taking a spring off, then the rod just fell into place where it was supposed to be. The driver side is also fucked up, but i think it just has to do with the cable on that side (can be moved by hand but the pressure applied by the parking brake isnt strong enough to actuate the lever on the assembly.

thankfully i didnt have to take it far enough apart to find out. be about a month before i could tell you; got to tear most everything apart then and clean tons of rust off and replace some things then. ive only had it since august and dont treat it like i should, and 130 000 miles means some things are starting to go wrong. from the head gasket to the pinion seal, ive got my work cut out for me.

might be on here a little more then lol, getting help especially if i decide to change the build significantly.

Hmmm...the pics Jeff posted look similar to mine. I had the same problem a few months ago. Turned out to be misadjusted parking brakes. My manager and I took the rear drums off and found the rear shoes still looked new. Although my manager had to heat up the right rear adjuster rod as the gear was seized to the rod. Now it takes about 8 clicks to engage and the lever doesn't go all the way up as it did when I first bought it.

When you get things apart, be sure to clean and lube your caliper pins with synthetic caliper grease. They tend to seize up on our cars if not routinely serviced. The pinion seal leak on the 10 bolt is a factory installed option -- they just about all do that. If it is simply wet, and not dripping on the ground, you may want to save yourself the trouble and skip this. Lots of guys have fixed them and they just start weeping again soon thereafter.

The lt1 has the parking brake as part of the caliper. It has a lever that pushes the piston in the caliper.

I figured out why I haven't had any parking brake for--well-- years
Thought it might just be an adjustment thing, pulled the wheels and discovered both levers just flopping around and the cables are attached. Pulled the rotors and discovered the pin inside the plunger was not in the cup of the lever. When the shop put the Moser 12 bolt in the F'd it up.
Anyway the boots are shot. They are no longer available from GM.
Anyone the remedy ??
