    Old GTO

Does anyone here know thier old GTOs? I'm trying to figure out what kind of rear ends are typically in the 1968-1973 models and what kind of power they can handle.

I'm thinking of slapping together a beater out of an old rundown turd, the body might be half bondo and primer, but I'll beef up the frame, tear out the busted interior and slap something practical but not pretty together, do a cheap rebuild on a big block and race it until to tears itself apart.....but with that said I don't want it breaking down all the time or getting me killed. So I'll probably put a bit of money into the steering & brakes as well.

Any advice welcome, but I'm mostly interested in the rear ends I can expect to find and if there was a factory disk brake option in the rear.

It should either be an 8.2" or a coroporate 8.5" Depends on the year and the options. Dad has a 72 chevelle with an 8.2" Won't hold shit for power. It'll do for what he's going to do with it, but anything over 350 - 400hp that will see track time will kill it with extreme prejudice.

    Sadly now demodded :(

The Pontiac 10-bolt is nothing like the Chevy 10-bolt except for the ring gear size. 4-pinion 8.5" (8.2" thru 69) 10 bolt's were used behind 400 & 455 so...

The 8.5" corporate is the same throughout GM's lineup. The 8.2 might be different, not sure on that one.

The gears from my 8.5 in my impala/caprice/caddilac brougham/roadmaster fit into a half ton chevy/gmc truck rear end, which in turn will fit into a housing from a 75 Nova/skylark/ventura/omega/apollo.

OP...check out this page http://www.novaresource.org/axle.htm I know it's for Nova's but it will help a little with figuring out what you've got and what you can do with it.
