Manual or auto? If you have a manual, you already have 3.42's and if you're an auto, I think you have 3.23's since it's a GT. I'd say 4.10's for a manual and 3.73's for an auto.
I had a green 94 GT and I loved it! I loved the "transmission performance" button and the blue-tinted side mirrors.1998 Trans Am, A4, SLP Loudmouth I, US Exotics WS9 ram air hood, Volant intake, 3.23's, 70k miles

If your manual go with 4.10's and usually on ebay you can pick up a set of Motive Gears for fairly cheap. As fas as it being a DD, you shouldnt have any issues at all, your not going to go from 26 MPG on the highway to 18 just by going with the gears. The car is going to be way more fun to drive, your going to be in your powerband quicker and stay there longer. The key is not to always bang going from 1st to 2nd gear and take off hard, since our Diffs' dont have the best reputation taking abuse. Some people have no issues and others will easily break them, ive never had issues with gears swaps in LT motors in the past just LS1's, meaning bolt on cars.

then go 3.42 or 3.73 gears. 4.10 gears for an auto is overkill unless its a track-only car and even then it's pushing it...
check the RPO codes and see if you have a 2.73 or 3.23 (performance ratio) in your car already. autos came with one of those 2 gears. 3.23 was an option gear though...

Stall will help the auto alot but they are still 2.73 gears so you have to make the choice of do you want to stall it "you may need a tune if you go over 2500 I belive" or gears wich you will need a recal tune for speedo. Either way your gona need a tune. My way would be go to a yard and get a used rear with 3.23 or 3.42 gears and then do a stall at the same time you swap out the rear. Just read up on the tell tail signs of junk rears and search untill you find a decent one. then you can go through yours latter and put what ever gears you want in it and sell the one you don't want.

that's interesting....but that does seem like a lot of trouble....how much would the parts for gears run me for say 3.42?

i agree, had a friend with a 95 lt1 auto and he did 3.73's
He didnt like how fast he went through first gear. He switched to 3.42's and loved it. It should be pretty cheap. As long as your possi clutches in the rear end are ok, you should spend 200 on the gears and 150 for a bearing kit. An honest shop should only charge you around 350 for labor. total of less than 800$ unless you do it your self. You might need a series 2 carrier if you have 2.73 gears right now. I have heard of that before. I luckly have always had at least a 3.23 when i changed my gears, no carrier change for me. Not even sure the cost or details of this.
Also, a 94? Im not sure you can program them, You might have to get a custom chip for it to make your speedometer correct. My 93 could not be programmed. 93 may have been the last year of the speed density. I know you can program a 95 and newer. Not sure about 94?

If you're going to put a stall converter in - it's very important that you lower your gear to what was suggested (3.42 or 3.73), so that you utilize & maximize your car's potential with the new stall.

I was plannin on puttin 3.73's in my LT1 auto car. its got 2.73's now.
if you do a higher stall with that steep of a gear, theres gonna be a a TON of converter slippage, and it'll build a lot of heat up.
do gears, then stall. for stall speed I'd suggest ATLEAST 3200. my dyno graph gets into its meaty torque band at about 3500 rpm, so I was gonna throw a 3600 vigilante converter in there.
