attn: wood workers
How do I go about restoring this cedar chest? i'd like to strip off all the nasty varnish and bring out the beutiful natural wood. The thing is some 70+ years old so i don't want to fuck it up as I get the feeling it's a future family heirloom.

It has a petina, don't ruin it. You want a 70 yr old chest to LOOK 70 years old.

Patina is the green color given to copper to make it look antique.

don't touch it. as an antique that chest is beautiful just the way it sits.
however...if you must play with it i highly suggest that you take it to an antique restoration specialist especially if you aren't sure of how to proceed.

Both correct.

I'd almost leave it alone. Have a cushion sewn up for the top and it can pull double duty in the furniture department.
Otherwise, you are either going to have to sand it down, or utilize a chemical stripper to remove the old stuff. Looks like a lot of work waiting to happen.

Set it on fire.
You'll be warm and have no more worries about it.

i didn't fuck it up-we were given it like that. I think it looks like ass and would rather see it burn. BUT if there is a way I can polish it up/restore it like it should be, then I'll be interested in taking on the project.

Ive done A TON of wood sticks from military rifles ranging from 1880-1960.
Strip it and sand it smooth and go over with 0000 steel wool till it gets a baby but smooth finish. Then take rubbing alcohol and dry out the wood and apply a LIGHT stain coat. Red mahogany is my favorite and looks good with that wood IMO

Just redo the top and leave the rest alone. Some sand paper will do fine. Then you can stain to match and seal it.

My grandparents have been in the antique business for over 50 years, and i have a ton of antique furniture... If you want to keep that finish just spray it down with water then murphy's oil soap.
