    Linux users enter

I havent used linux since red hat and mp3 format wasnt even in existance, and 14.4 was blazing fast.

i see there are quiet a few kernel updates and a WHOLE lotta distribution packages... these seemt to be the most popular, anyone recommend 1 over the other?

unbuntu, debian, fedora, suse, mandriva, slackware, and open/free/net bsd series.

i was reading that unbuntu is the most popular right now, i was interested in fedora since it came from red hat company and thats what i used to use, and the bsd seems to have the longest unix lineage of all the linux out there so im assuming the compadibility is near max... but someone out there alittle more knowledgeable out there, please help me out! feel like im learnin this crap all over again!

heres the second question... right now i have twin 250gb in raid 0 and a 1tb drive i use for storage and backup... will linux work if i make a partition on the 250gb raid drive or will i have to put it on the nonraid secondary? (1tb) (all 3 drives are ntfs vista ultimate)

If you make a partition, and load linux on that partition. It should work just fine. Just during boot up, you will have to select which OS you want to load.

    +1

so long as your using some kind of boot manager, shouldn't be a problem. and personally, I've always played around with FreeBSD. ports collection FTW! but, one of the distro's with linux now also uses a port collection. not sure which one would have to search it.

There's a linux book out at Barnes & nobles that has about 6 - 9 different versions of linux on a cd that comes with the book. Can't remember the name of it.

alright i decided on fedora, and i ran into a problem. then i tried ubuntu...and i ran into a problem. any of you enlighten me?

if i try to boot using fedora 10 it freezes at this screen:

if i try to boot using ubuntu, it kicks to this screen, which is only an improvement over fedora because at least this error kicks me to a navigable, albiet completely dead end shell (console, whatever) with only the very basic command line commands like navigation etc.

are you installing these from disk?

are you loading a generic kernel?

are you sure it recognized all of your hardware?

I'm not sure on what the current versions are for the two you've tried. How old is the computer you are trying to install on?

I've never tried installing from a usb stick. no clue how that all works out. easiest i can tell you, download the .iso files, burn them to disk, and go from there.

    sorry I can't help much

before install...i never even get to it to install it, it gets to that point and freezes. it should go into a gui either x or gnome or whatever and have the options from thier to use i guess lilo? or use some partition creator and install onto the harddrives while in the live environment.

booting from a live cd does the same thing, the usb drive just takes place of a cd, ive tried those too but get identical results.

hrm... odd. I've never heard of this happening BEFORE even installing.

post or pm me a link to one of the ones your trying to use. I'll d/l it tomorrow and give it a whirl on my desktop and see what happens.

    ive tried 2 fedora iso's, f10-i686-live.iso and fedora-10-x86_64-dvd.iso, and two ubuntu's, ubuntu-9.04-desktop-amd64.iso and ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso.

ive tried using wubi installer, unetbootin-windows-323.exe live usb creator software and fedoras own live usb creator software in all above combos to see if it was just currupt installation to the usb sticks, and i tried 2 different sticks of different sizes, except the dvd fedora iso can only fit on the 8gb one because its a 4.7gb image obviously.

ive tried both 64 bit (one fedora 1 ubuntu) iso's burned to cd to boot from but i get the same results as booting from the usb.

i played with it for a few hours last night and i got to the point where at least with the 64bit ubuntu version i get as far now as basic loadup during boot, i see the first ubuntu splash screen with progress bar flashing back and fourth, then a progress bar at a second ubuntu bar that goes to 100% complete, then the screen goes black but i hear a good quality ubuntu logo sound play!!! but then it does nothing, and just sits there on a black screen, like a hair shy of getting to a gui! its like the windows chime right before you get to the user login screen and vista splash. i'm so close!!!

ps. i also noticed that before i get the "radeon crash" as i call it i noticed in the text right above it it says cpu1 check, panic, out of sync or something to that extent...?

I've got Ubuntu 9.04 for i386 d/l'ing now. figured I'd give it a whirl and see what happened.

Have you tried maybe taking a step or two back and trying an older release? Just to see what happens.

well, after the d/l finished and I burnt Ubuntu to disk, went and put it in my desktop.

Setup my partitions the way i wanted, rebooted with disk in, and the install went like a breeze was actually hoping for some errors since i went ahead and put it on an external 1tb usb drive. guess if nothing else i have Ubuntu to play around with now when i'm bored.

First form of linux I've actually installed. Little different. Even though Freebsd integrates alot with linux.

Had anymore luck with it on your box?

I've heard of a lot of guys having trouble with Crossfire and Linux. If you're still having troubles I would suggest knocking your setup down to single/single cards and trying to install that way. Once you're into the install (given that it goes that far), you can configure and install updated drivers to possibly get crossfire running. EnvyNG is a great program for updating graphics drivers.

As for the different distros, I could never get into Ubuntu very much, too ugly for me I guess. Mint is build on top of Ubuntu but includes many non-free drivers and codecs (they are still free to you and me). If you like KDE I would suggest trying out Sabayon or Mandriva.

thought it might be an overclocking issue so i redid the entire bios back to oem specs and still had same problems. im gunna have to guess its video card related for sure cause ive exhuasted everything else, and the text errors say radeon in them, and the boot hangs right when the video changes, or rather, SHOULD change to the gui!

ati says they are linux compad... guess ill have to do more research

my original graphics card was built into the mother board. I'm not seeing that it picked up on it instead of my ATI All-In-Wonder.

And I'm having problems getting the drivers right for it ATM. so, could explain part of yours. I'm starting to wonder why i never tried this before. In Fbsd, i'd spend a day after installing just getting all my periphials working.

Ubuntu auto-detected everything, down to network setup and all. I'm thoroughly impressed.
