Cam explanation
Hey guys, I want to do a cam but I want to know what I'm getting before I order it. I've read through the posts so I have 3 or 4 good cams picked out but I still don't know how much bigger one is from another.(Besides lift of course) My question is at what point does the duration become so much that the engine starts to have a choppy idle? I am leaning toward the TR224. 224/224 .563/.563 114 LSA. Also from what I have read the 114 versus the 112 with improve idle quality with the sacrifice of so low end power right?

Oh, and my mods as of now are: SLP lid,K&N,shorty headers,cat-back,and a Racetronix pump . Before the cam I will have a CATTED Y pipe and an intake. Then of course a tune.

So you want a choppy idle or no?

red with black stripes- 2002 Trans Am WS6
ive heard about 230 duration is around the most for streetability, but everyone says something different. some of it depends on the tune too. 114 does have a smoother idle than 112. i dont know about the change in power. someone that knows will post more info. im just going off what i heard. my 228 232 with 114LSA doesnt idle too bad and i havent had it tuned yet.

I was gonna suggest the El Torro cam but since you don't want any chop then you'll probably want to go with the 114lsa you mentioned above although I'd get at least a 228R.

I'm running a 224 112lsa, slightly choppy idle more with more power all across the board.
if I had to do it again I'd go and reckomend a 228. to keep a smooth idle you'll want 114lsa like said above, or even go upto a 116lsa

Tighter LSA will move your powerband down slightly. As far as duration affecting lift, it's the lobes which the cam are ground on that will cause some cams with equal duration to have different lift. The ramp rate of some lobes are greater than others and will yield higher lift at the same duration.
There used to be an awesome sticky on Ls1tech, but good luck finding it with the search

blacker than wesleysnipes- 98' trans am
what really give cams a choppy idle is the lsa....you loose torque/low end when you have large amounts of overlap ...228 114lsa my friend is right for you.
