2008 Hunnert Car Pileup - Rats And Trads

Bill McGuire goes undercover at the Hunnert Car Pileup to reveal the latest in today's rat rod/traditional rod sceneTrucksters are another popular development in the rat rod world. Since the vintage Ford sheetmetal from which traditional rods are constructed has become so expensive, essentially out of reach except to old, fat, rich guys, rat rodders refuse to embrace that requirement. Instead, they often base their rods on truck cabs of all makes from the '30s and '40s. They're dirt cheap and still relatively plentiful, especially in the Midwest, where one seems to be languishing behind every barn. Channel the old truck cab over a traditional hot rod frame or even a late-model car or truck chassis, and voil, you have a truckster. Build quality can vary from barely legal to Goodguys caliber; we've seen some junk, but we've seen some really nice ones, too. Now, a truckster is not a traditional hot rod in the sense that you can pick up an old copy of HOT ROD and find such a vehicle on the pages inside. But for the rat rod builder, the truckster captures the flavor for him--or close enough, anyway. And it does so with available parts at affordable prices, which is dead center in the spirit of hot rodding.
