Although they are out dated now the 8800gts 640mb is a good card. Mine still plays the latest and greatest games...I never liked the ATI cards, they sound like a jet taking off when you turn your computer on. Do you have pci-express?

i'm trying to find a 1 gig one for a reasonable price... i want to be able to run games at full resolution and graphic detail with out dropping frame rate below 50...

1 gig? Are you playing at 2560x1600+ rez? You must have a 24+ inch screen if your considering 1GB ram. Otherwise, your wasting money buying a card with that much vram. Don't fall into the group that things more vram = more FPS. Look at the speed of the card, not size.

Need to know if you have pci-e or pci-e 2 (assuming pci-e) then what are you looking to spend? Do you really need a gig videocard?
the 8800 z28_06374 suggested is a good card. and they are about 180. Not a bad deal. Looking to go sli?

ATI is supposed to be making great cards from what I hear. But don't the 4850's vent their heat back into the case? If so, screw that. I've read really good things about their 4870's.
If you're going to a 30" monitor, I'd really suggest Crossfire or SLI. That's going to be a tough resolution to push on high settings. I am using two 8800GTS 512's (G92) pushing 1920x1200 reso. Had it for close to a year. Love it. There's not a game out there I can't push to max settings and not get 30+ FPS.
Also, if all you're playing is WoW, just get a bargain bin card and be done with it until you're ready to upgrade your whole system.

Another thing to consider...
Windows 7 is right around the corner and is supposedly coming packaged with Dx11. So, that said, you might want to wait as long as possible to see what happens in the hardware market for Dx11 support - even though there isn't and won't be any games for it for a good while.
Play the wait and see game, to be completely honest.

I have a 9800GT and 8600GTS, both awesome cars. Plus, they both have a lifetime warrenty. Nvidia has been been awesome for me...used to run ATI.
I am running a 28" Viewsonic LCD/HDMI...
BTW - bought the 9800GT from Frys for 150.00, and I watch Blu-Ray and HD dvd movies and do some gaming...Last edited by Blown Interceptor; 01-16-2009 at 08:07 PM.

I may just return both 4870's for one 4870x2.
The one 4870 is not much of an upgrade from one of my 3870x2
