haha they are actually arguing that a large suv that gets around 12 mpg and costs 50k is cheaper to own that a 23k prius? I'd love to know how they came up with that dollar per mile figure

no....wow, you failed...
They are saying that in terms of environmental impact, the prius is much more destructive to the environment than the hummer b/c of the manufacturing process.

That's what I was thinking too! I mean for years we have been instructed to 'properly' dispose of certain batteries.
The batteries in those cars are the 'mother' of all batteries and will have to be disposed of at some point

if you read, it's not just the disposal of them, it's the creation. They start in Canada in the country's largest smelter which has done tons of environmental damage, then are shipped to europe for refining, then to china, then to japan-all those cargo liners emit a SHIT load of pollution in the process. AND THATS JUST FOR THE BATTERY!

ha i guess, but they did distinctly write in the article that cost per mile is cheaper on a hummer.
Yeah the battery packs to make hybrids work are very high tech and the technology to make that superceded the technology to get rid of them. However, I do like how they used a Hummer for comparison when they could have just used any other car or better yet one of GM's very own HYBRID V8 trucks.

Prius's suck.
This is just further proof.
As for MPG, check out the Top Gear episode where they take a Pruis and a new BMW M3.
The Prius has to do 10 laps as fast as possible around the track while the M3 only has to keep up.
The Prius did 17mpg while the M3 did 19. Its more about how you drive rather than what you drive.

Yeah, I read it and understood the travel. But, I've always thought about the disposal.
One of my friends have one. When the battery goes bad, and they do. They are super expensive to replace as well. Hers was still under warranty, but if it wouldn't have been it would have set her back a pretty penny.
So, over all... how good are these cars for the environment or the consumer in the long run besides good gas mileage I guess is the question.

The batteries are supposed to last around 100,000 miles or so. Nowadays most batteries are recycled but it still has some environmental impact. I just wonder how much is true. With all that shipping of the battery and parts I would think it would cost way too much for the battery to make it feasible.

If you think electric cars can't be fast, you need to look around. It's a new technology, give it some time to develop. One great thing about electric power; you have instant torque. Go watch some "Mean Green Machines" shows. The have contests between electric vehicles and their gas counterparts. Things like drag bikes, atv's, suv's. Surprisingly, the electric vehicles do pretty damn well. The drag bikes were the best. The electric was like 0.005 secs slower than a gas drag bike.
