Ping (often falsely said to stand for Packet InterNet Grouper, Packet InterNet Groper or Packet InterNet Gopher[1]) is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network; it is also used to self test the network interface card of the computer, or as a speed test. It works by sending ICMP “echo request” packets to the target host and listening for ICMP “echo response” replies. Ping estimates the round-trip time, generally in milliseconds, records any packet loss, and prints a statistical summary when finished.
The word ping is also frequently used as a verb or noun, where it can refer directly to the round-trip time, the act of running a ping program or measuring the round-trip time.

Ok spaz thats like way overcomplicated...
Ping is the time in milliseconds that it takes information to get to the server and then back to you... or in other words, the overall delay in your connection.

the lower the ping the better, yes, but it does not effect your download speeds. Ping mainly comes into play when you are doing something in real time... (IE: playing multiplayer video games) In downloads and just surfing, its not really noticeable.

latency in VOIP sounds like this
"hey whats up?'
**noticeable pause**
"nothing"
**noticeable pause**
(both at same time) are you still there?
**noticeable pause**
(both at same time) no you first
**noticeable pause**
dude the latency on this connection sucks. the ping time must be above 150ms but below 300ms. just write me an email. laters.
