'01 Ram Air TA Rear Hatch Lift Strut Mount loose in Hatch
Greetings!
Anyone ever seen this? Have a fix?
I guess the hatch lift strut mount (in the hatch itself next to the glass) is glued(?) to the hatch and one has broken loose and the end of the strut moves around in the cutout around the mount. I guess I can live with it, but I am surprised at this heavy ass glass and hatch using such a crappy mount!
Anything you can add is greatly appreciated.
Thanx!
Mike

Your description sounds like the stud may have enlarged the hole in the hatch. You can take the car to a bodyshop to have the hole welded shut and then re-drilled/tapped for the stud to thread into.

Unfortunately there is nothing to weld. The entire hatch is layers of fiberglass/composite material. The stud is screwed into a fiberglass piece that is sandwiched between the inner and outer layer of fiberglass of the hatch. I assume it is glued from the factory and it must have broken loose and now moves freely within the hole/area between the layers, the strut is still attached to the mount and the entire assembly moves back and forth each time I open the hatch. The additional irony is that since the entire mount (slug if you will) is within the hole so I can not get behind it to squeeze in some glue/epoxy. I have thought about drilling four small holes and screwing it to the hatch, but the margin for error is (IMO) not worth the risk of drilling through the hatch (even though it is under the rear spoiler). I guess this is not much of an issue since I have not had much luck finding it on forums or by google (unless I am not using the right search nomenclature, which is a real possibility!), so far I had someone point me to only one other similar issue and no reply on what the solution was, if any.
Looks like I may just be living with this...Thanx for the feedback!

You could get yourself a flexible magnet or flexible claw and fish out the nut from inside the hatch. Just a thought.
